BMW will continue to lead the global luxury car market in 2024, despite a 2.3% decline in deliveries to 2.2 million units. This figure helps BMW maintain its leading position in the luxury car segment. Meanwhile, Mercedes-Benz decreased by 3% to 1.98 million units, while Audi plunged by 11.8% to 1.67 million units. However, most of BMW's models saw sales decline compared to the previous year, with the exception of the two SUVs BMW X1 and XM plug-in hybrid .

The BMW XM is the slowest selling car model of the German luxury car company.
According to BMW’s 2024 Annual Report, the XM grew an impressive 15.8% to 7,813 units. However, the controversial design model still ranked at the bottom of the company’s sales chart. Meanwhile, the Z4 – a convertible – sold 10,482 units, down 4.3% from 2023 but still outsold the XM. Although the XM is significantly more expensive than the Z4, it is rare for a convertible to outsell an SUV.
The increase in BMW XM sales is not too surprising because 2024 is the first year that this model is fully available on the market, after being launched in early 2023. Of the 7,813 units sold, the US accounted for 1,974 units, equivalent to 25.27% of the total global XM volume. In the US, the standard BMW XM configuration costs $ 161,425, significantly higher than the XM 50e configuration sold in Europe (priced from 132,400 euros). However, many people think that the lower-priced X5 M Competition is a more reasonable choice, especially for those who do not like the unique design of the XM.

To develop the XM, the company canceled the Vision M Next – a mid-engine sports car, inheriting the spirit of the legendary M1, which was 95% complete.
BMW hoped that the XM would be a “safe bet” in the SUV trend, but this decision left regrets. To develop the XM, the company canceled the Vision M Next – a mid-engine sports car, inheriting the spirit of the legendary M1, which was 95% complete.
If it does come to fruition, the Vision M Next could help BMW improve its image after years of criticism for its controversial design and focus on SUVs. However, the German automaker ultimately decided to launch the XM – an SUV that uses an existing platform and shares its engine with the new M5, helping to save costs. This strategy is similar to what BMW did with the 3.0 CSL and Skytop – expensive, limited-production models based on the M4 Coupe and M8 Convertible.
