The Russian Defense Ministry announced on January 27 that its army had regained control of the village of Nikolayevo-Darino in Russia's Kursk province from Ukrainian forces.
The Ukrainian Air Force accused the Russian military of attacking Ukraine with 104 Shahed attack drones and decoy UAVs on the night of January 26 and early morning of January 27, according to The Kyiv Independent news site. The Ukrainian Air Force claimed to have shot down 57 attack UAVs in 10 provinces.
Meanwhile, the Russian Defense Ministry announced that its forces had attacked Ukrainian military airports and UAV assembly and storage sites within 24 hours, according to TASS News Agency.

The Russian Defense Ministry also announced that Russian air defense forces destroyed 64 Ukrainian UAVs and four rockets of the US-made high-mobility artillery rocket system (HIMARS).

Russia claims to have retaken a village in Kursk
The Russian Defense Ministry announced on January 27 that its troops had regained control of the village of Nikolayevo-Darino in Russia’s Kursk region from Ukrainian forces, according to Reuters. Nikolayevo-Darino is a small village with a population of less than 150 people.
Thousands of people have been evacuated from Kursk province since Ukraine launched an offensive into the province on August 6, 2024, while many others are trapped in territory controlled by Ukrainian forces, according to AFP.
Meanwhile, Sky News reported on January 27 that a Ukrainian commander said that North Korean soldiers had withdrawn from an area in Kursk after suffering significant losses.
Also according to Sky News, North Korean soldiers are taking a break from combat, probably to treat the wounded, wait for reinforcements and correct shortcomings made during the fighting in Kursk.

Later that day, Ukrainian Special Operations Forces spokesman Oleksandr Kindratenko told The Kyiv Independent that North Korean troops appeared to have temporarily withdrawn from one of the front's axes in Kursk.
As of the evening of January 27, there was no information about the reaction from North Korea or Russia. Neither Moscow nor Pyongyang confirmed or denied the information that North Korean soldiers came to help Russia fight against Ukraine in the Kursk region.

EU extends sanctions against Russia for another 6 months
European Union (EU) High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas announced on social network X on January 27 that foreign ministers of EU member states have agreed to extend the embargo against Russia for another 6 months, according to The Kyiv Independent .
Ms Kallas asserted that extending the sanctions would continue to deprive Russia of revenue for its military campaign in Ukraine.
Kallas made the announcement after Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto said the EU had provided “requested guarantees” on energy security. Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban had earlier threatened to veto extending sanctions on Russia until Kyiv resumed transit of Russian gas. Kyiv ended transit of Russian natural gas on January 1.
US stops military aid to Ukraine
The suspension of Russian gas transit has led to a dispute between Ukraine on one side and Hungary and Slovakia on the other. Hungary and Slovakia complain that Ukraine's failure to renew the Russian gas transit agreement endangers their energy security.
