It is known that the patient was brought to the hospital by his family with a sore throat, difficulty swallowing and a feeling of obstruction in swallowing. At the hospital, doctors quickly examined and prescribed an esophagogastroduodenoscopy under anesthesia for treatment.

Dr. Hua Van Duong, Deputy Head of the Department of Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology, who directly performed the endoscopy, said that the endoscopy team coordinated with the anesthesiologist to successfully remove a piece of pig bone measuring about 1.2 x 0.7 cm. The piece of bone had a sharp tip and was embedded in the wall of the esophagus about 18 cm from the upper jaw. After the procedure, the patient's health was stable and did not need to be hospitalized.

What to do when swallowing a foreign object?

According to Dr. Hua Van Duong, foreign bodies in the esophagus are a common emergency in daily life, especially during eating and drinking. In adults, common foreign bodies include fish bones, chicken bones, duck bones, pork bones or sharp objects such as toothpicks. Meanwhile, children often accidentally swallow small foreign objects such as rings, coins, buttons, small toys or longan seeds.

Depending on the type of foreign object, the degree of damage to the esophagus will vary. Sharp foreign objects such as fish bones, chicken bones or pork bones can cause serious damage such as bleeding, esophageal perforation, infection or mediastinal abscess.

If detected early and treated promptly, the risk of complications will be minimized. However, in case of late detection, the treatment process will become complicated and can be life-threatening.

Doctors recommend that people should pay attention, if there are signs of suspected foreign body aspiration such as pain, discomfort, difficulty breathing in the throat, quickly go to medical facilities with expertise and technical equipment for timely examination and treatment.
