(To Quoc) - The Mother-of-pearl Inlay Heritage Exhibition by Emmie MASSIAS and Marine COL opens to visitors from March 21 at IDECAF Exhibition Hall, 31 Thai Van Lung, District 1, Ho Chi Minh City.
Within the framework of the Villa Saigon 2025 Artists in Residence program, the French Institute in Vietnam presents the exhibition Mother of Pearl Inlay Heritage by the artist duo Emmie MASSIAS and Marine COL. The exhibition will be on display from March 21 to April 3 at IDECAF Exhibition Hall, 31 Thai Van Lung, District 1, Ho Chi Minh City.
The exhibition Heritage of Mother-of-Pearl Inlay by artists Emmie Mai Linh Massias and Marine Col is a journey to explore the traditional Vietnamese art of mother-of-pearl inlay in interior design, skillfully combining ancient craft techniques with modern industrial production. By combining these techniques, the duo has re-imagined a craft that was influenced by the French colonial period, but still retains its Vietnamese identity.
Marine Col and Emmie Mai Linh Massias
Emmie Mai Linh Massias (1997) is a French-Vietnamese artist, designer and researcher. She explores material forms and narratives, questioning the relationship between the body, territory and systems of exploitation. Emmie’s work highlights issues of heritage through objects and processes of engagement, creating opportunities for the sharing of knowledge and stories.
Marine Col (1999) is a French artist and designer who studies raw materials and their noble and potential reuse.
With a playful and sustainable approach, she aims to enrich her creativity while promoting the value of local economies and crafts, creating connections between craft and industry, and questioning the necessity of production in certain contexts.
Amalgame Studio, founded by Marine Col and Emmie Mai Linh Massias in Guadalajara, Mexico, is a place where research, experimentation and production of objects and furniture intersect, while remaining closely connected to the lands and their material cultures. Inspired by the concept of “amalgam” – the unexpected blending of disparate elements – the two artists combine diverse influences to create works where contrast and contradiction are evident.
Their work emphasizes the tension between raw materials and the creative process, through playing with texture, transformation, and the stories they convey. With this approach, the duo turns each project into an exploration of the material and the stories it contains.
