Current status of generation, collection and treatment
Vice Chairman of An Giang Provincial People's Committee Ngo Cong Thuc said that with the amount of waste generated about 1,220 tons/day (urban about 680 tons/day and rural about 540 tons/day), the total amount of waste collected, transported and treated is only about 938.52 tons/day (reaching 76.93%). The two units collecting and transporting household waste are An Giang Urban Environment Joint Stock Company and Green Environment Construction Company Limited.
This amount of waste is transported to 7 waste treatment clusters: Binh Hoa treatment area (Chau Thanh) treats 348.61 tons of waste/day using sanitary landfill technology; Canal 10 treatment area (Chau Doc city), treats 164.51 tons of waste/day using sanitary landfill technology; Phu Thanh waste treatment area (Phu Tan district), treats 124.78 tons of waste/day using sanitary landfill technology; An Cu landfill (Tinh Bien town), treats 65 tons of waste/day using untreated dumping; An Tuc landfill (Tri Ton district), treats 44.77 tons of waste/day using untreated dumping; 4 landfills (Kien An, Kien Thanh, My Hoi Dong, My An) treat 139.72 tons of waste/day using untreated dumping; Thoai Son District Waste Treatment Plant, processes 51.13 tons of waste per day using non-energy recovery incineration technology.
Vice Chairman of An Giang Provincial People's Committee Ngo Cong Thuc received T-Tech Vietnam Technology Group Joint Stock Company
The remaining 281.48 tons/day, mainly in deep rural areas, islands... are buried, burned... or discharged into the environment by people. The province still has 24 open-air landfills that have been discontinued and handed over to local management, with an estimated waste volume of 153,744 tons.
Garbage collection efforts
The province has deployed Thoai Son Solid Waste Treatment Plant (incineration without energy recovery), with a capacity of 50 tons/day, operating stably since 2019. Cho Moi Solid Waste Treatment Plant (incineration without energy recovery), with a capacity of 100 tons/day, has been in trial operation since November 2024. Currently, there is a problem, An Giang Urban Environment Joint Stock Company is fixing and repairing the damage. Long Xuyen Solid Waste Treatment Plant (incineration without energy recovery), with a capacity of 300 tons/day, is under construction (started from June 21, 2024).
The above situation shows that currently, waste treatment clusters are not capable of ensuring waste treatment for the entire province. Therefore, in the short term, it is necessary to invest in expanding waste landfills. In the long term, investing in additional waste treatment plants (using combined incineration and power generation technology) to ensure that it is a sustainable household waste management strategy according to regulations.
By 2030, no more landfills
The province strives to have a collection and treatment rate of domestic solid waste of over 95% in urban areas and over 80% in rural areas by 2030. There will be no more landfills, instead there will be modern treatment methods such as incineration combined with power generation, recycling, and heat treatment. At the same time, increase the recycling and reuse rate of domestic waste, treatment combined with energy recovery or organic fertilizer production, minimize environmental pollution and protect public health. There will be policies to attract businesses to invest in domestic waste treatment plants using advanced, environmentally friendly technologies.
An Giang Urban Environment Joint Stock Company launched a campaign to collect waste and clean the environment.
Vice Chairman of An Giang Provincial People's Committee Ngo Cong Thuc said that in the coming time, the province will have measures to treat waste using advanced, modern, environmentally friendly technology, classify waste at source to recover maximum reusable products and apply high economic efficiency waste treatment technology. Along with solid waste treatment planning, improve the efficiency of waste collection and transportation, meet the requirements of distance, reasonable service price; processing capacity must be ensured according to clusters of districts...
Recently, Chairman and General Director of T-Tech Vietnam Technology Group Joint Stock Company Nguyen Dinh Trong proposed to invest in a waste treatment complex in An Giang province in the direction of a recycling economic zone, circular economy, with a scale of 500 tons/day and night; generating 15MW of electricity, with a total investment of 1,500 billion VND. Vice Chairman of An Giang Provincial People's Committee Ngo Cong Thuc assigned functional units to study consulting opinions and advise the Provincial People's Committee on handling.
Assessing the current situation and discussing waste treatment plans, Alternate member of the Party Central Committee, Deputy Secretary of the Provincial Party Committee, Chairman of the An Giang Provincial People's Committee Ho Van Mung emphasized that the province's efforts to collect and treat 80-95% of domestic solid waste by 2030, with no more landfills, is a great determination of the province, aiming to solve environmental problems and ensure a safe quality of life for the people. Thereby, it is recommended that localities and units urgently solve the waste problem for localities that are in urgent need. Urgently implement investment policies, approve feasibility studies of 11 projects on waste treatment; start and operate projects to close and thoroughly treat environmental pollution at 9 landfills... issue and implement regulations on waste classification at source; have a detailed plan for the closure of landfills. When planning factories, it is necessary to follow the principle of ensuring waste collection and modern waste treatment technology, recycling and reusing waste...
