Accidentally swallow dentures while eating

Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên12/01/2025

On the afternoon of January 12, Dr. Nguyen Thanh Tien, Head of the ENT Department (Quang Nam General Hospital), said that doctors had just successfully performed endoscopic surgery to remove a foreign object, a false tooth, from the esophagus of patient NVT (51 years old, in Binh Nam commune, Thang Binh district, Quang Nam).

Currently, patient T.'s health is stable and he is being treated at the ENT Department.

Previously, at 1:05 p.m. the same day, the ENT Department received patient NVT who was brought to the emergency room by his family in a state of painful swallowing, difficulty swallowing, chest pain, difficulty breathing, and inability to eat or drink.

Relatives said that while eating, Mr. T. accidentally swallowed his dentures.

Through examination and emergency tests, doctors determined that there was a foreign object in the C3-C5 segment, 5 cm long, 3 cm wide, with a steel hook.

The patient was then taken to the Department of Anesthesia and Resuscitation. Here, Dr. Tien and his team performed rigid endoscopic surgery and successfully removed the foreign object (a 3x5 cm denture). The endoscopic surgery lasted about 40 minutes.

Because the structure of dentures has many prongs, they stick tightly to the esophagus, making the endoscopy process more difficult than other common foreign objects.

After the intervention, patient T. was able to eat and drink normally and no longer had painful swallowing.

Doctor Tien recommends that people should be careful when eating and drinking to avoid choking on foreign objects, which can affect digestion and threaten life. In case of accidentally swallowing foreign objects, they should go to a medical facility immediately for timely support. They should not apply folk "tips" such as drinking water, swallowing rice or trying to stick the foreign object down their throat, which will make treatment more difficult.

According to Dr. Tien, recently, the ENT Department has promptly performed surgery and successfully treated many cases of foreign body aspiration that were brought to the hospital by their families for emergency treatment.
