Recently, doctors from the Department of Otorhinolaryngology, Ninh Binh General Hospital successfully performed an endoscopic procedure to remove a dangerous esophageal foreign body, helping the patient escape a critical condition.
A 64-year-old male patient residing in Dong Son, Tam Diep, Ninh Binh was admitted to the hospital with difficulty swallowing and neck pain when eating and drinking. According to the patient, he had symptoms after eating chicken porridge two days earlier.
After performing a flexible endoscopy, doctors discovered a large foreign object in the middle third of the esophagus, obstructing the eating and drinking path. Recognizing that this was a complicated case of foreign body aspiration, the patient was ordered a rigid endoscopy for immediate intervention.

Prevent choking on foreign objects when eating and drinking
To reduce the risk of choking on foreign objects, doctors give some recommendations:
- Eat slowly, chew thoroughly, especially for children and the elderly.
- Remove bones from food, avoid eating bones that are easy to choke on such as chicken bones and fish bones.
- Regular dental check-ups, especially for denture wearers, to reduce the risk of tooth loss.
- Do not attempt to handle foreign objects with your hands or try to swallow more food to push the foreign object down.
- Go to a medical facility immediately if you have symptoms of foreign body aspiration for timely intervention.
