Since September 6, the Zalo group of the class of Mr. Nguyen Van Hanh's son, residing in Ha Dong district, has continuously had information exchanged between the homeroom teacher and parents.

“On the afternoon of September 6, the class announced that they would be closed from September 7 until the storm passed. Next, the teacher updated many notices, official dispatches, and telegrams from the Ministry of Education and Training, the Hanoi People's Committee, and the Department of Education and Training so that parents could grasp the situation. When Typhoon Yagi temporarily passed, the parents of the whole class were ready to send their children back to school on Monday, September 9. On the night of September 8, we received the news: "The school was severely affected by the storm and could not be repaired immediately, so we asked for parents' opinions on online learning on September 9," said Mr. Hanh.

According to Mr. Hanh, on the morning of September 10, when the items damaged after the storm were repaired and cleaned up, and the children could go to school directly, late in the morning of September 10, his family received a notice that in the afternoon of the same day, there was a risk of heavy rain causing flooding, so the school let students stay home, and parents could pick up their children. In cases where parents could not pick up their children in time, the school would carefully arrange a waiting area.

On the morning of September 10, due to the impact of the storm, students at nearly 120 schools at all levels in Hanoi were unable to go to school. Early in the afternoon of September 10, many schools that were holding in-person classes decided to let students go home early due to concerns about the risk of flooding.

“Due to the impact of Typhoon Yagi, according to information from the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, in the next 3-6 hours, Hanoi will have heavy to very heavy rain, with a high risk of flooding. Therefore, parents can come and pick up their children… This notice only applies to today, September 10, 2024. If there are any other changes for the remaining days of the week, the school will inform parents,” the announcement of Luong The Vinh Secondary and High School, Cau Giay District clearly stated.

Stop many activities, switch to online learning

Also in the latest announcement of Luong The Vinh Secondary and High School, Cau Giay District, due to the impact of storm Yagi and the serious flooding in the northern provinces, the school decided to stop organizing the program "Bright Moon of Luong School" this year to join hands to help those in difficult circumstances after the storm and flood.

In a newly issued announcement, Nguyen Tat Thanh Secondary and High School (Cau Giay) also informed that school-level recreational activities will be temporarily suspended.

To promptly respond to the complicated developments of the current storm and flood situation, Foreign Language Secondary School (University of Foreign Languages, Vietnam National University, Hanoi) decided to change the learning format from in-person to online on September 11 until further notice.

The school reminds parents to ensure that their learning devices have internet connection, create a quiet space for their children to focus on their lessons; students strictly follow the school's online learning regulations.

Nguyen Tat Thanh Secondary and High School said that depending on the actual situation, the school's Board of Directors will decide whether to teach in person or online. Meanwhile, with the consent of 100% of parents, Hanoi - Amsterdam High School for the Gifted switched from in-person to online on September 11 to both not interrupt learning and ensure student safety.

Faced with the risk of prolonged heavy rain affecting in-person learning at schools, the Department of Education and Training of Ba Vi district has directed two schools in Minh Chau island commune, including Minh Chau Primary School and Minh Chau Secondary School, to switch to online teaching from September 11. The Department of Education and Training of the district requires schools to arrange staff, teachers, and employees to be on duty 24/7 at schools and school locations to grasp information and promptly handle arising situations.

In the current situation, the Hanoi Department of Education and Training requests that the Departments of Education and Training, vocational education and continuing education centers, and affiliated schools review infrastructure and prepare plans to switch to online teaching.

“Schools need to proactively grasp the situation, review each student’s learning facilities and implement online teaching plans as soon as necessary. In cases where students’ families are in difficulty and lack learning equipment, along with synthesizing and having on-site support plans, schools need to flexibly organize forms for students to maintain their studies. Along with that, schools actively review facilities every day, and only organize direct teaching when safety is ensured,” noted the Hanoi Department of Education and Training.
