Cold days are the perfect time to enjoy hot pot, but some eating habits can inadvertently harm your kidneys.
According to China Times, doctor Hong Vinh Tuong (China) warned about some mistakes when eating hot pot that can damage the kidneys and are not good for health in the long run:
Like the sauce rich
Hot pot is essentially a dish that is full of calories, oil, salt and sugar. Not only that, many people also like to use rich sauces to dip meat and fish in hot pot to enhance the delicious flavor. However, this habit leads to high sodium intake - this is the most harmful substance for the kidneys.
The recommended principle for choosing sauces is "the thinner the better, avoid strong aromas". For example, you can use thin soy sauce, black vinegar and white vinegar with minced garlic, coriander, and chopped onions.

All you can eat
According to statistics, a hot pot meal can make you absorb up to 3,900 calories, equivalent to the calories of 14 bowls of white rice, far exceeding the recommended 700 calories for an adult's lunch or dinner.
In addition, the amount of sodium in a hot pot meal can be up to 6.6g (the recommended amount is only 2g). When eating hot pot, you easily get thirsty and like to drink sugary drinks or beer. This is not only harmful to the kidneys but also has the risk of leading to gout.
Eat long
Hot pot eating time can be 2 to 5 times longer than a normal meal. Hot pot water is still boiling continuously after 30 minutes, heating up food additives. After cooking hot pot continuously for more than 90 minutes, the nitrite concentration will increase nearly 10 times. Excessive nitrite can cause acute poisoning with symptoms such as lack of oxygen and difficulty breathing.
In addition, after high concentrations of nitrite enter the human body, it will be decomposed by intestinal bacteria and produce nitrosamine, which is harmful to the kidneys, cardiovascular system, liver, intestines and stomach; if combined with alcohol, the harm will be even greater.
Do not separate raw and cooked food
Many people are prone to diarrhea after eating hot pot because the digestive tract absorbs too much seasoning (oil, salt, sugar), leading to overload. In addition, unhygienic habits when eating hot pot also cause intestinal instability. For example, using the same pair of chopsticks to pick up both raw and cooked food. Each time you have diarrhea or gastroenteritis, it not only damages the digestive tract but also puts a burden on the kidneys, the organ responsible for regulating water and electrolytes.
Eat more noodles and vermicelli at the end of the meal.
Even though they are full, some people still have the habit of ending their hot pot meal with a bowl of vermicelli or noodles with broth. In addition to absorbing too many calories, sipping more hot pot broth also puts pressure on the kidneys to process the amount of spices, especially salt.
