Eating hot pot without adding new broth, dipping vegetables and meat too rare or drinking water that is too hot... can make you sick.

Hot pot is a favorite dish of many people in winter, but you need to be careful when eating it to avoid getting sick. Below are three common mistakes when eating hot pot:

Drink hot pot too hot, eat too fast

Doctor Nguyen Hoai Thu, Vietnam Institute of Applied Medicine, said that the temperature of a hot pot boiling on the stove can be over 100 degrees Celsius, so the food taken out of the hot pot is very hot. If you eat it right away, it will damage the thin layer of skin in your mouth. The mucous membrane in the stomach is also affected by this way of eating, leading to stomach ulcers. Therefore, you should let the food taken out of the hot pot cool down before eating.

Do not add new broth

The longer the hot pot water is boiled, the saltier it will be because the water gradually dries up along with the amount of spices released during the process of dipping the food. In addition, hot pot water boiled on the stove for a long time causes vitamins to decompose, fat to become saturated, which is not good for health. The amount of purine, fat, sodium and grease in the hot pot water also increases towards the end, increasing uric acid in the blood, which is not good for people with gout. Therefore, hot pot water should not be boiled on the stove for more than 60 minutes, but should be added with new water.

Dip vegetables and meat too rare

According to Dr. Le Van Thieu, Department of General Infection, Central Hospital for Tropical Diseases, many people think that rare food will be tastier and sweeter. However, eating rare, red food can easily cause bacteria and parasites to enter the digestive tract.

Beef tapeworms usually parasitize in lean beef. Eating dishes made from undercooked beef or pork, or beef or pork offal, or eating them raw or still red, can cause tapeworm infection. Aquatic vegetables used for hot pot such as celery and water spinach must also be thoroughly cooked because they can be nests of tapeworms. In the natural environment, the tail larvae and cysts of the large liver fluke attach to aquatic vegetables or swim in water. People who eat raw vegetables growing in water are at risk of getting sick.

According to experts, hot pot broth often contains many hot spices such as lemongrass, ginger, and chili. People with stomach pain should be careful when eating hot pot because hot and spicy spices can easily cause stomach problems to recur. Pregnant women should also limit eating hot pot with many hot and spicy spices because it is not good for the fetus. People with diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and rheumatism should limit or not eat hot pot with a lot of protein and fat (seafood, offal, etc.)
