Specifically, the patient is Ms. TTT (54 years old, Long An), admitted to the hospital with severe abdominal pain and nausea.
Ms. T's family said that 2 days before being hospitalized, she ate hot pot and then the above symptoms appeared so she was taken to the hospital for examination.
After examination, the patient was indicated for endoscopy of the esophagus, stomach, and duodenum for examination.
Doctors discovered a foreign object about 3.5cm long (a lemongrass branch) piercing the stomach wall.
Immediately, the doctors used specialized pliers to remove the foreign object and the lemongrass branch was safely removed.
Doctor Truong Minh Hieu, head of the endoscopy department of this hospital, said that having a foreign body in the digestive tract is very dangerous and requires immediate treatment, otherwise it will leave some serious complications such as the foreign body can puncture the esophagus, causing bleeding, leading to inflammation, abscesses, etc., in some cases endangering life.
Normally, when choking on foreign objects such as bones, toothpicks, etc., people will often try to spit them out, use their hands to pick out the bones, or eat a large piece of rice to swallow them down the stomach...
But in reality, these actions will cause the throat lining to be scratched, infected, and inflamed. Swallowing more will also cause the bone to go deeper or be embedded deeper, making it difficult to remove.
Doctor Hieu recommends that in case of accidental swallowing of a foreign object, the patient should be taken to the nearest medical facility for examination by a doctor and appropriate treatment.
Patients should absolutely not treat foreign body aspiration with folk remedies such as swallowing rice balls, patting the head, etc., which can cause the foreign body to get stuck deeper or cause more damage to the digestive tract.
