Hot pot is a dish that combines many ingredients such as meat, vegetables, seafood, beans, sausages, broth... so the amount of calories in this dish is equal to the total calories in all the ingredients combined. According to experts, the energy in a traditional basic hot pot is 900-1,500kcal.
Notes when eating hot pot
- Must eat cooked food and drink boiled water
Dr. Truong Hong Son, Director of the Vietnam Institute of Applied Medicine, said that in reality, many people have the habit of taking food out of the hot pot right after putting it in, while the food is only half cooked. Thus, the food will not kill all parasites, which can cause diarrhea.
When eating hot pot, you should eat vegetables first and meat last to ensure your health (Illustration: HT).
- Do not eat when just taken out because eating hot food can burn the lining of the mouth and throat.
The temperature of a hot pot boiling on the stove can reach over 100 degrees Celsius. Therefore, the food taken out of the hot pot is very hot. If eaten immediately, it will damage the thin skin in the mouth. Not only that, the mucous membrane in the stomach is affected by this way of eating, leading to stomach ulcers. Therefore, you should let the food cool down before eating.
According to the National Institute of Nutrition, more and more studies have shown that eating hot food and oral cancer and intestinal cancer are related.
That is because the intestinal wall is relatively thin, and can usually only withstand food temperatures of 50 to 60 degrees Celsius. Exceeding this temperature threshold will damage the wall.
When the temperature of food reaches about 70 to 80 degrees Celsius, especially when we drink tea, this temperature can reach 90 degrees Celsius, causing serious damage to the intestines.
- Do not eat too salty because eating too salty will have negative effects on health, especially for people with high blood pressure.
Eating too much salt is a major risk factor for high blood pressure, stroke, heart attack, increased risk of stomach cancer, kidney failure...
Eat hot pot properly
According to Dr. Son, to ensure good health, you should eat vegetables first and meat last. That way, your stomach won't have to work too hard. You should also drink water while eating hot pot to help digest food faster.
Everyone should also eat more green vegetables. Green vegetables will enrich the hot pot, help detoxify, cool the body and absorb fats better. Leafy vegetables contain vitamins and minerals that are good for health.
"Each meal should only last no more than 45 minutes to 1 hour. Because when you prolong your meal time, your digestive system will have to work harder, causing overload and affecting your health," said Dr. Son.
Alternatively, you can use only about 100g of beef, and you can add cod and tofu to the hot pot for more lean protein. Or you can make your own broth with chicken and herbs that are simmered for a long time with minimal calories because there is no oil.
Use a soy-based dipping sauce, mixed with green onions and chili peppers for a flavorful low-calorie dip.
