People in Ho Chi Minh City sign a pledge to eradicate mosquito larvae in their habitats.

The Department of Health directed the Center for Disease Control (HCDC) to provide detailed instructions on measures to eliminate breeding sources of mosquitoes that transmit dengue fever in a practical and feasible manner.

At the same time, the Department of Health coordinated with the Department of Home Affairs to advise the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee to establish inspection teams to monitor the implementation of mosquito and larvae eradication activities to prevent dengue fever.

In addition, the Department of Natural Resources and Environment launched a movement to classify waste at source, integrating instructions on handling waste that can accumulate water and measures to maintain hygiene in public places.

The Department of Health directs detailed instructions on measures to eliminate breeding sources of mosquitoes that transmit dengue fever in a practical and feasible manner.

According to the Department of Health's report, as of week 20 of 2023, the southern region recorded 23,011 cases of dengue fever, down 6.1% over the same period in 2022; of which Ho Chi Minh City recorded 7,918 cases from the beginning of the year to June 11.

Ho Chi Minh City is the locality with the highest number of dengue fever cases in the southern region (accounting for 32.3%).

Dengue mosquitoes breed in many places

According to the Ho Chi Minh City Center for Disease Control (HCDC), from May 22 to June 15, HCDC monitored dengue fever prevention activities in 25 wards, communes, and towns in 17 districts, Thu Duc City.

The monitoring results recorded 47 points with mosquito larvae out of 85 monitored points, accounting for 55.2%. Of the 9 risk points that are households, 7 points had mosquito larvae, accounting for 78%. These figures show that the risk of dengue fever is scattered throughout the city and even in households.

HCDC informs that mosquito breeding grounds are containers that store domestic water such as lakes, barrels, jars, flower vases, and water cups...

But there are also many other familiar objects and locations in the household that can be breeding grounds for mosquitoes that we rarely think of.

These are unused objects thrown away around the house that will be ideal breeding grounds for dengue mosquitoes when the rainy season comes.

Therefore, just a little bit of stagnant water in a bucket or basin that is left behind can become a breeding ground for mosquito larvae. Or even less likely to be aware that water trays from refrigerators, steam fans, hot and cold water dispensers or air conditioners can become breeding grounds for dengue mosquitoes.

In households that raise livestock or pets, water glasses and drinking troughs for poultry or pets often have mosquito larvae if not washed properly.

"It can be said that the development of mosquitoes that transmit dengue fever is closely linked to all people's activities. Therefore, only when each person and each household proactively searches for and eliminates mosquito breeding grounds can dengue fever be controlled.

Spend 15 minutes every week, find and handle containers that can hold water in your own home. Preventing mosquitoes from breeding, reducing the number of mosquitoes will reduce disease transmission, reduce the number of cases, protect the health of yourself and your loved ones," HCDC calls.
