U17 Vietnam finalizes list for 2023 Asian Cup

Coach Hoang Anh Tuan selected 24 players to go to Thailand, before narrowing it down to 23 according to the regulations for the 2023 AFC U17 finals.

The U17 Vietnam squad includes three goalkeepers, 10 defenders, six midfielders and five forwards. PVF - CAND and SLNA contributed the most with five players. Following were Viettel (4), Hanoi FC (3), Hue (2). The clubs of Ho Chi Minh City, Dong Thap, HAGL, Da Nang and Nam Dinh each had one player.

Coach Hoang Anh Tuan assessed that these are the best quality players and have the best form in the U17 group. Among them, captain midfielder Nguyen Cong Phuong (Viettel) stands out the most with his leadership ability and good vision. In addition, the team has Nguyen Bao Ngoc - the excellent goalkeeper of the 2022 National U17 tournament, 1.91m tall center back Dinh Quang Kiet of HAGL, or technical striker Nguyen Le Phat of PVF - CAND.

In the qualifying round in October 2022, Vietnam played at home and won Group F. The team won 4-0 over Taiwan, 5-0 over Nepal and 3-0 over Thailand.

Vietnam U17 team will gather again from May 2023, playing a friendly match and losing 0-3 to PVF Second Division Club. From May 19 to May 22, the team will train in Qatar, playing a friendly match and drawing 0-0 with Laos U17 and winning 2-0 with Qatar U17. Immediately after that, the team will go to Japan for training until June 5, winning Kaiseikan High School 3-1, winning Honda FC U18 3-1 and drawing 3-3 with Tohoka University.

Returning to Vung Tau for training, Vietnam played another friendly match and lost 0-2 to Yemen. According to the plan, coach Hoang Anh Tuan and his team will move to Bangkok, Thailand tomorrow morning, June 14.

The 2023 AFC U17 Championship will be held in Thailand from June 15 to July 2 with 16 teams divided into four groups. Vietnam is in Group D and will face India, defending champions Japan and Uzbekistan on June 17, 20 and 23.

The top two teams from each group will advance to the quarter-finals. The four semi-finalists will also qualify for the 2023 FIFA U-17 World Cup, which will be held in Peru in October.

The AFC U17 Championship has been held 18 times, with Japan winning the most – three times in 1994, 2006 and 2018. Including this tournament, Vietnam has participated in the tournament eight times, with the best result being fourth place in 2000.
