Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Transport Tran Quang Lam has just assigned the Urban Traffic Management and Operation Center to study and develop a plan to organize a priority bicycle lane on Mai Chi Tho Street. This plan must include a network diagram connecting parking lots, urban areas, tourist attractions and commercial centers along the route. In addition, the arrangement of painted lines, signs and safe connection points at intersections and crossing points are mandatory factors to ensure safety and convenience for cyclists. The deadline for submitting a detailed plan is before July 30, after which the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Transport will seek opinions from relevant departments and branches. This project will be implemented with regular expenditure funds from the state budget. The Urban Traffic Management and Operation Center will have to propose a scale plan and a specific implementation plan to ensure the project is completed and put into use in 2024. Mai Chi Tho Street is located in the East of Ho Chi Minh City, connecting Vo Van Kiet Street with Vo Nguyen Giap Street (formerly Hanoi Highway). This road is 12 lanes wide, passing through the Thu Thiem New Urban Area, so the study of opening a priority lane for bicycles is considered appropriate. At the same time, the Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Transport assigned the Road Traffic Infrastructure Management Center to complete the plan to organize routes with priority lanes for bicycles in the city center and along the metro line. The Department of Transport's leaders noted that the separate bicycle lane plan needs to have a network diagram connecting metro stations, parking lots, urban areas along the metro line, tourist attractions, commercial centers, etc., associated with traffic organization solutions, model designs for each route, full arrangement of painted signs and safe connections at intersections or crossing points. This plan must also be completed before July 30 so that the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Transport can consult with relevant departments and branches. Previously, in order to increase connectivity for buses and Metro Line 1 (Ben Thanh - Suoi Tien), since the end of 2021, Ho Chi Minh City has piloted a public bicycle model in the central area, helping people and tourists have more travel options. The Department of Transport has directed the Transport Management Department to coordinate with the Public Transport Management Center to research and propose mechanisms and policies to encourage businesses to invest in the public bicycle system.
