TPO - The national exam for gifted students in Literature required students to write an essay on the topic: "Listening to silence". Literature teachers said that this is an abstract concept, a big challenge for candidates.

This morning (December 25), candidates took written exams in Math, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Literature, History, Geography, English, and Informatics.

The Literature exam consists of two parts: Social Essay (8 points) and Literary Essay (12 points). Candidates have 180 minutes to complete the test.

In it, the Social Essay section gives an excerpt by James Lovelock: “The Earth seems to be a living thing: not as the ancients saw her – a Goddess of sentiment, purpose and vision – but as a tree. A tree that exists silently, never moving except by swaying in the wind, but always in constant conversation with the sun and the soil. It uses the sun, the water, the mineral nutrients to grow and change. Yet all these changes are so quiet that, to me, the old oak tree in the yard still looks as it did when I saw it in my childhood.”

From the excerpt, the question requires candidates to write an essay on the topic "Listening to the silence". This question is worth 8 points.

In the Literary Essay section, the question requires candidates to discuss the idea: "The artist trains himself in a constant relationship with others, on the path between the beauty that cannot be ignored and the community that cannot be separated from."

According to Mr. Nguyen Manh H., a Literature teacher at a high school in Hanoi, this year's Literature exam for gifted students demonstrated investment and creativity in selecting content, while also guiding the comprehensive assessment of students' thinking ability, literary appreciation and writing skills.

However, besides the outstanding advantages, the test also has certain limitations and difficulties for candidates.

In terms of advantages, the exam has a reasonable structure with two clear parts: Social Essay (8 points) and Literary Essay (12 points). This ensures comprehensiveness in assessing the abilities of students with literary qualities, while still demonstrating reasonableness with the assessment framework for excellent students in Literature.

The social essay on the topic “inner state” explores a unique aspect of the soul, requiring students to not only understand society but also have the ability to deeply feel the value of silence in life.

The literary essay question is related to Albert Camus’s thoughts on the relationship between the artist and the community. This is a topical and humanistic topic, helping students to think about the role of beauty and creativity in literature. With a humanistic and profound topic, candidates can easily demonstrate their literary ability and thinking.

However, from this teacher’s perspective, the test still has certain limitations. First of all, the test uses complex language and expressions. Especially in the Social Essay question, the use of the concept of “silence” can cause difficulties for many students.

This is an abstract concept, not common in everyday language. This requires a high level of thinking ability, which can lead to the risk of students not understanding the requirements for developing the writing.

“Although the topic of “calmness of mind” is very meaningful and profound, it is not close to the general awareness of students. Especially in places where learning conditions are not uniform, students may lack the skills and life experience to analyze the profound meaning of this topic. In addition, the introduction also has a lot of data, leading to students’ ability to handle the problem not being able to cover it all,” said Mr. H.

According to the Literature teacher, the topic of the role of the artist and the relationship between art and the community is a highly academic topic. "However, students must truly understand the ideas of Albert Camus and have a rich knowledge of literature to be able to develop a profound essay, avoiding stopping at general, sketchy analysis," the teacher said.

On December 24, the National High School Excellent Student Examination for the 2024-2025 school year officially opened at 68 Examination Councils nationwide, with 6,482 candidates registered to take the exam, an increase of 663 candidates compared to the 2023-2024 school year. This year's exam includes 13 subjects: Math, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Informatics, Literature, History, Geography, English, Russian, French, Chinese, Japanese. Of which, this is the first year Japanese is held.
