Vietnam team has depth
The Vietnamese team won the AFF Cup 2024 thanks to the strong mark of Nguyen Xuan Son with 7 goals. However, it would be a mistake to ignore the talent of coach Kim Sang-sik. The Korean coach constantly changed the starting lineup, using flexible personnel to create a multifaceted and unpredictable team.
Mr. Kim only has a fixed squad including Nguyen Dinh Trieu (goalkeeper), Nguyen Thanh Chung, Bui Tien Dung (center back), Doan Ngoc Tan, Nguyen Hoang Duc (center midfielder) and Xuan Son (striker). The remaining 5 positions, the former Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors coach flexibly swaps, depending on the opponent and the performance of his students to calculate the tactics.

Or midfielder Nguyen Hai Long became a hero with a goal in the 90+19 minute against Thailand, after coming off the bench in the match at Rajamangala.
Although he has not yet formed a specific playing philosophy, coach Kim Sang-sik has shown his ability to read the game well. At the same time, he has a consistent and quality reserve force, so that anyone who enters the field can make their mark. "Group 2", that is, the reserve players, have been quietly molded by Mr. Kim since previous training sessions through continuous testing. Then, when he has grasped the ability of each student, Mr. Kim has chosen the right time for new faces like Bui Vi Hao, Chau Ngoc Quang or Hai Long to step into the light.
The reserve force plays a very important role, helping coach Kim Sang-sik mold the team with depth. In this training session, the "group 2" force continues to be present in large numbers, with each position having at least 3 or 4 quality players.
For example, in the midfield, Mr. Kim has Ngoc Tan, Hoang Duc, Vo Hoang Minh Khoa and Nguyen Thai Son. 4 players (2 veterans and 2 young players) will compete for 2 official positions. On the left wing, Trieu Viet Hung, Nguyen Van Vi and Khuat Van Khang are waiting to break through. On the right wing, Truong Tien Anh and Vu Van Thanh can take turns playing.

The fierce competition of the Vietnamese team is reflected in the fact that no one is given a starting position. The players have to constantly prove themselves, even in matches that seem to be within their capabilities, such as against Laos or Cambodia.
'Group 2' sets off
For an experimental strategist like Kim Sang-sik, the matches against Cambodia (friendly, March 19) and Laos (2027 Asian Cup qualifiers, March 25) are good opportunities for reserve players to show themselves.
In goal, Nguyen Van Viet and Tran Trung Kien deserve a chance to "test their mettle". In defense, rookie Pham Ly Duc is an interesting piece that Mr. Kim can add to a defense line that already works well together.
In the midfield, Minh Khoa can assert himself if trusted. The midfielder born in 2002 is a tireless "shuttle" who has carried the midfield of U.23 Vietnam and Binh Duong Club in the past 2 years. Minh Khoa is versatile, with good long passes, long shots and challenges. He can provide energy for Hoang Duc to focus on distributing the ball, or bring ideas if playing alongside Ngoc Tan.
As for the attack, Bao Toan, Ngoc Quang and Hai Long need to take the spotlight. Especially when the Vietnamese team will face two weaker opponents, which means more space for the attacking players to perform, instead of purely pressing, competing and counter-attacking like in the semi-finals and finals of the AFF Cup 2024. Or for striker Dinh Thanh Binh, in the context of Tien Linh having a slight injury and Xuan Son being out until September, this is the time to "score points" with coach Kim Sang-sik.
The matches in March will be the "runway" for the reserve team to take off. And who knows, the supporting players might get the official spot, like what Dinh Trieu, Ngoc Tan or Vi Hao did.
