Thus, compared to the 2006 general education program, this year's graduation exam has a number of new subjects appearing for the first time, such as Information Technology and Technology. To adapt to the graduation exam according to the new program, the enrollment plans of universities have also been adjusted appropriately, increasing the selection opportunities for candidates.
For the first time, Information Technology and Information Technology subjects are included in the graduation exam.
The 2018 General Education Program aims to develop students' qualities and abilities, including 7 specific abilities: Mathematics, language, science, information technology, technology, physical and aesthetic. In particular, information technology and technology abilities aim to train human resources to meet the requirements of the 4.0 industrial revolution. The two subjects of Information Technology and Technology are also basic components of STEM education in general education and universities. However, from 2024 onwards, almost no university has included this in the admission combination because it is not a subject in the high school graduation exam.
Many opinions say that adding two subjects, Information Technology and Information Technology, to the list of optional subjects in the high school graduation exam from 2025 is in line with practical requirements. This helps students have the opportunity to choose subjects more freely than before, without having to hesitate between the subjects they like, the subjects they are good at, and the subjects for graduation exams and university entrance exams.
Mr. Nguyen Huy Hoang, a teacher at Tran Hung Dao High School (Hanoi) shared: Previously, the two subjects of Information Technology and Technology were not included in the high school graduation exam. In the exams for gifted students, only Information Technology was organized, not Technology. Therefore, the number of students registering for these two subjects was very small; even teachers did not have experience in creating exam questions for these two subjects.
With Information Technology and Technology becoming optional subjects in the high school graduation exam for the first time from 2025, the position of the two subjects Information Technology and Technology will be raised, the conditions for the subjects will also be properly invested, with a clear roadmap for students to have the conditions and opportunities to access modern technology and develop more comprehensive skills, thereby improving competitiveness in the domestic and foreign labor markets, meeting the rapid development of science and technology in the era of technology 4.0.
From the perspective of the compiler of the new 2018 general education textbook program, Associate Professor, Dr. Ho Sy Dam, editor of the Informatics program, also supports the plan to include the two subjects of Technology and Informatics in the high school graduation exam for the first time from 2025 because these are both very necessary subjects for students in the current context.
However, Associate Professor Dr. Ho Sy Dam also noted that schools need to organize early career counseling for students, especially from grade 10, so that they can better understand the professions and the role of Information Technology and Technology in many fields. Counseling activities should be designed to help students understand the relationship between subjects and the skills required for each profession; help students understand that Information Technology is not only an exam subject but also an important foundation for many professions such as computer science, engineering, information technology, economics, medicine, education and even professions in the fields of Social Sciences and Humanities.
Expanding new admission combinations, increasing choices for learners
To facilitate students in choosing elective subjects in the high school graduation exam that are suitable for their abilities, strengths and admission goals, many universities have expanded and added admission combinations to suit the first batch of students graduating under the new 2018 general education program. According to information from the University of Technology, VNU Hanoi, in 2025, the school will have 6 admission combinations. In addition to the traditional combinations, the school has added 2 more combinations with Informatics subjects: Math, English, Informatics and Math, Physics, Informatics.
Hanoi University of Transport also added a new combination of GT1 (Mathematics, Physics, Informatics) from 2025 with some majors such as Computer Science, Information Technology, Electrical Engineering, Robotics Engineering, Control Engineering and Automation. Vietnam Academy of Agriculture added many admission combinations with subjects of Informatics, Technology, Economic Education and Law such as: Combination of Mathematics, Physics, Technology; Mathematics, Literature, Economic Education and Law; Literature, History, Economic Education and Law; Literature, Geography, Economic Education and Law; Mathematics, Literature, Technology. In 2025, the Academy of Journalism and Communication plans to reserve 50% of its enrollment quota for the admission method using high school graduation exam scores. Some new combinations in admission include: Literature, English, Economic Education and Law; Literature, English, Informatics; Literature, Mathematics, Economic Education and Law.
Hanoi University of Science and Technology also added the K01 admission combination (Math, Literature combined with one of the four subjects: Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Informatics) in addition to the traditional admission combinations. Ho Chi Minh City University of Education also plans to adjust the admission combination to match the subjects of the 2025 high school graduation exam. Accordingly, the school will eliminate the combinations with the Natural Sciences and Social Sciences exams, and add new combinations with the subjects of Economic Education and Law, Informatics, and Technology. Ho Chi Minh City University of Industry and Trade will add new combinations such as Math, Informatics, and English to be used for admission to the majors of Information Technology, Information Security, and Data Science, etc.
In 2025, Hanoi University of Industry plans to deploy new combinations of subjects with Technology and Information Technology including: Mathematics, Physics, Technology (A0C); Mathematics, Physics, Information Technology (A0T); Mathematics, Chemistry, Technology (B0C); Mathematics, English, Technology (D0C). This will be one of the combinations used to consider admission to 35 majors/training programs of the school. Dr. Than Thanh Son, Head of Training Department, Hanoi University of Industry said: The goal of the 2018 General Education Program is to help students master general knowledge, effectively apply the knowledge and skills they have learned to life and self-study for life; have a suitable career orientation through choosing subjects according to their career orientation.
Informatics and Technology, along with Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, etc., play an important role in promoting STEM education. Therefore, including these subjects in the admission combination is consistent with the requirements of some of the school's main training fields such as Technology, Engineering, Computers and Information Technology; consistent with the goal of training human resources to serve the 4.0 industrial revolution.
