In September 2022, Truecaller launched an AI (artificial intelligence) assistant feature for its paid users, providing an assistant that can answer calls and ask us questions with an artificial voice. The app allows users to configure the assistant by choosing from seven default voices.

While useful, Truecaller's improved AI assistant raises certain concerns

Now, Truecaller’s AI assistant has been upgraded, and can now create an artificial version of the user’s own voice. This feature is the result of a collaboration between Truecaller and Microsoft, with Truecaller using Azure AI Speech’s Personal Voice technology to allow app users to create an artificial version of their own voice. This way, the AI assistant on Truecaller will answer calls and ask questions to the person on the other end of the phone using its owner’s voice.

The AI assistant on Truecaller is limited to the paid plan and is only available in select countries, including the US, Canada, Australia, South Africa, India, Switzerland, and Chile. To create an artificial voice version of themselves, users will need to access the AI assistant from the app and accept the relevant terms and conditions. Next, the app will ask the user to record a consent statement and read a small snippet of text that will be used to create the artificial voice.

This is where the potential of Microsoft’s technology comes into play, which only requires a few seconds of audio to create an artificial version of the user’s voice. Once done, the AI assistant will answer incoming calls and interact with the caller without disturbing its owner. If the person requests to speak to the real owner, Truecaller will notify the user so that they can consider whether to answer the call or not.

It’s a cool feature that highlights the potential of artificial intelligence in our everyday lives, but it also raises concerns about the potential for misuse of voice cloning technology, as scammers increasingly use AI to mimic the voices of people they know and scam people out of money.
