According to WindowCentral , Microsoft has just officially introduced Resume, a new feature on Windows 11 that allows users to continue editing documents from their phones on their computers. Tested in the Windows Insider program before, this feature is officially named in the Windows 11 Build 27788 update on the Canary testing channel.
With Resume, Windows 11 lets users continue working on documents from their phone to their PC as soon as they unlock it, supporting both iOS and Android via OneDrive
Resume is integrated into OneDrive and works by displaying a notification on Windows 11 when it detects that a user has viewed or edited a document in the last five minutes before unlocking the PC. Clicking on the notification opens the document directly in the corresponding app on Windows 11, making the workflow more seamless.
Before being called Resume, the feature had several different names, including "Continue from Phone" and "Hand Off." The name is similar to the Handoff feature on macOS, which has similar functionality, which may have prompted Microsoft to change the name to avoid confusion.
Currently, Resume only supports Word documents, Excel spreadsheets, PowerPoint presentations, and some OneNote content. To use it, your computer needs to be locked while the document is open on your phone, ensuring the syncing process works properly.
In addition, the Windows 11 Build 27788 update also introduces a preview of Windows MIDI Services. This is a major upgrade to the MIDI system on Windows, helping the operating system better support the MIDI 2.0 protocol, bringing many improvements to musicians and music producers.
Microsoft also announced a list of other bug fixes and improvements in the update, but Resume and Windows MIDI Services are the two most notable. The addition of this feature shows that Microsoft is focusing on improving multi-device connectivity and improving the continuous work experience on Windows 11.
