While outage reports are primarily for Outlook, Microsoft says "we have confirmed this issue is affecting multiple Microsoft 365 services" and are monitoring systems for recovery.
Users on X posted that Xbox services, which are owned by Microsoft, were also experiencing issues. Reports started arriving on DownDetector as early as 3:30 p.m. ET and peaked at around 4 p.m. with more than 37,000 issues.
Microsoft Outlook is one of the world's most popular email services, with an estimated 400 million users worldwide. The video calling service Microsoft Teams, which emerged in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic, now has around 320 million users worldwide.
Users have been experiencing persistent issues with Outlook in recent weeks. The software company previously suffered major global outages that took hours to resolve in 2023 and 2024.
On November 26 last year, Outlook and Teams services were also restored after more than 24 hours of technical glitches.
