From the successful trial planting of Cayen pineapple, Vu Quang district (Ha Tinh province) aims to plant 2,000 hectares of hilly and mountainous land. This type of tree will replace the area of acacia and ineffective crops. The new direction promises to help farmers escape poverty sustainably.
Vu Quang is a mountainous border district, located in the West of Ha Tinh. The district has 62,284 hectares of natural area. In recent times, Vu Quang district has selected many key tree and animal varieties for economic development such as oranges, Yen Du persimmons, and especially Cayen pineapple.
The first two experimental planting communes are Duc Bong and Duc Huong, with a total area of 2 hectares. From the success of the pioneer unit, the total pineapple growing area in Vu Quang district has now reached nearly 10 hectares. In addition, a number of other communes have registered to plant another 10 hectares, concentrated in Duc Bong, Duc Linh, Duc Huong, Tho Dien communes, Vu Quang town...
Mr. Truong Thanh Ha - Director of the Center for Application of Science and Technology and Protection of Plants and Livestock in Vu Quang district said: The good and special thing we have done in this project is to mobilize the active participation of the people. This is different from other districts where enterprises cooperate with pineapple growing enterprises, and the state management acts as an intermediary to supervise the cooperation process. At this time, the people benefit mainly from labor days. In Vu Quang, people use their own land to cooperate with production enterprises, so they have jobs and earn profits of up to hundreds of millions of VND if they produce and fertilize well.
According to Mr. Ha, the process of technical supervision and guidance shows that Cayen pineapple trees not only adapt well to the weather and soil conditions of the mountainous areas in the district but are also suitable for growing on fertile soil.
Mr. Nguyen Cao Cuong - Head of residential group 4, Vu Quang town said: "My family has 4 sao of fertile land that used to grow corn and short-term beans and peanuts for livestock, with insignificant income. After visiting the pineapple growing model in Ninh Binh and receiving the encouragement of the Party Committee, the district government and Vu Quang town, I took the lead in expanding the planting of Cayen pineapple on this ineffective fertile land."
Ms. Le Thi Thanh Binh - Secretary of Party Cell 4 shared that under the condition that the district and town authorities are accompanying in terms of policy, calling on businesses to support people in paying late for seeds and fertilizers for production, there is no reason not to boldly convert.
In addition to the 6 communes that have organized planting, there are currently 3 communes Quang Tho, An Phu, Duc Giang that have registered to produce about 8 hectares of pineapple this year. In the long term, Vu Quang district continues to mobilize people to convert about 2,000 hectares of hilly land and ineffective fertile land to pineapple cultivation. At the same time, monitor and provide technical support in the care and evaluation of the effectiveness of pineapple plants in the area to serve as a basis for expansion.
Mr. Nguyen Thanh Son - Vice Chairman of Vu Quang District People's Committee said: "To increase economic value per unit area, in addition to citrus trees, we have been mobilizing people to convert acacia hills and ineffective fertile soil to link with businesses to grow Cayen pineapple to receive technical support, product consumption, and deep processing. The goal is to soon turn this crop into a key crop alongside orange trees."
The partner enterprise with Vu Quang district commits to invest in building a factory to produce and process pineapple juice and other products from pineapple in Vu Quang district when the registered pineapple growing area reaches 2,000 hectares or more. The enterprise is responsible for training, educating, and guiding the transfer of technical processes for planting, caring for, and harvesting pineapples to the people. In particular, when the pineapples are ready for harvest, the Company will purchase all products according to the signed contract. Specifically, the 1kg/fruit type will be purchased at 5,000 VND/kg; the 0.5 - 1kg/fruit type will cost 3,500 VND/kg; the 0.3 - 0.5kg type will cost 2,500 VND/kg.
“Pineapple is a drought-resistant crop, requires little investment, is easy to grow and care for, has high productivity, and is suitable for expansion in many localities of the district. On average, 1 hectare will yield 60 - 80 tons. With a selling price of about 5 million VND/ton, 1 hectare of pineapple after 18 months will bring in an income of 300 - 400 million VND, a profit many times higher than that of acacia or other crops” - Vu Quang district leaders calculated.
