Hanoi children enjoy cooling off in a thousand-year-old lake.
Hanoi is in the midst of a severe heat wave, with peak temperatures reaching 40 degrees Celsius. These days, Long Tri Lake located in the Thay Pagoda relic site (Quoc Oai district, Hanoi) has become a public "swimming pool" with a capacity of hundreds, thousands of people.
On the afternoon of May 21, many people brought their children to Long Tri Lake to cool off, mostly children between the ages of 5 and 15. Among them, many children had never known how to swim and were taught how to swim by their parents.
The lake area, the communal house yard, and the cool rows of trees have turned this place into a natural swimming beach. According to the locals, since 2011, the local government has renovated and dredged the mud in the lake and brought in clean water. Since then, on hot days, many parents bring their children to swim.
Mr. Nguyen Tat Hai (in Sai Son, Quoc Oai district) said that he often takes his children here to swim. “Before taking my children here to practice swimming and bathe, I remind them to swim close to the shore and always stick to their parents. I also prepared specialized life jackets as well as homemade life jackets made from water cans. I also go down with my children to make it easier to observe,” Mr. Hai shared.
Many teenagers enjoy playing in the cool blue water. Nguyen Le Huy said: “I really like coming here to cool off. Here, I can freely play with my friends because the space is large. The water here is quite clean and the lake is not too deep, so it is very suitable for us to swim and play,” Huy said.
According to the locals, the water in the lake is very clean. Everyone is conscious of not littering the lake. Previously, people only came to the lake to bathe, but now it has become a playground for children in the summer.
The children had fun. A series of extremely skillful jumping movements into the lake.
Most children are wearing life jackets, swimming rings, or plastic cans or styrofoam boxes.
Parents whose children do not know how to swim are always on the shore to monitor and provide timely support. Mr. Nguyen Tat Chung (in Sai Son, Quoc Oai district) said: "The village pond in front of the communal house and Thay pagoda was built during the Ly dynasty, so it is impossible to count how many generations have lived here. In the middle of the village pond, there is a communal house roof, the elders say that is where water puppetry is held. Since I was very young, my father took me here to bathe. Now that I have a family, I still regularly take my grandchildren here to bathe and learn to swim."
According to Mr. Chung, every time their parents take them to Long Tri Lake to cool off, the children are very excited and enjoy playing in the water. “After each summer, I see the children swimming very well, so I feel very happy,” said Mr. Long.
The People's Committee of Sai Son commune (Quoc Oai district) has also put up many notice signs with the words "Long Tri Lake is dangerously deep, beware of drowning".
As the afternoon progresses, more and more people come here. Many children often swim near the shore and around the floating house in the middle of the lake, in the water pavilion area - where water puppetry is performed during the festival season.
