The design of the pedestrian bridge across the Saigon River has the shape of a water coconut tree.

According to the Department of Planning and Architecture of Ho Chi Minh City, there are 12 architectural design options participating in the selection of "Architectural design options for the pedestrian bridge across the Saigon River". The selection consultant, the Center for Architectural Research (under the Department of Planning and Architecture), has shortened the 4 most optimal options, as a basis for considering and approving the project proposal that has entered the second round.

Scoring results, after reviewing and evaluating 4 design options of 4 consulting units participating in the competition, the Selection Council unanimously scored the CDN01 option of the Chodai-Takashi Niwa Architects and Chodai Kisojiban Vietnam Joint Venture the highest.

The chosen option has a design architecture in the shape of a water coconut leaf, which is considered to optimize the column system under the riverbed and bring the column system closer to the shore to create large underwater clearance, avoiding collisions well.

This option also solves the problem of the column system on the bridge deck due to the large span, so the visibility of pedestrians on the bridge is very clear. The circulating waterfall in the coconut-shaped design option is very suitable for the design of the central square of Thu Thiem.

In terms of architectural form, it is a unique and impressive solution that is not duplicated, simple, and attractive to residents and tourists when coming to Ho Chi Minh City. In particular, the investment rate is feasible and has an accurate basis.

After deciding on the design, the City People's Committee leader assigned the Department of Planning and Architecture to organize the announcement of the selection results according to regulations. At the same time, note some points in the next steps including the design plan needs to gather information, closely follow the content of the design task, and show appropriate connections with surrounding areas.

The detailed design phase must comply with the design idea and clarify the idea of the selected option; it is necessary to ensure technical requirements, construction safety, architectural landscape, and compliance with approved planning laws.

The pedestrian bridge across the Saigon River has its starting point on the District 1 side in the Bach Dang Port Park area, and on the Thu Duc City side at the riverside park in the Thu Thiem New Urban Area.

Currently, connecting Thu Thiem New Urban Area with other localities are Thu Thiem Bridge, Ba Son Bridge and Saigon River Tunnel, also known as Thu Thiem Tunnel.

According to the plan, Ho Chi Minh City is preparing procedures to build Thu Thiem 3 bridge, Thu Thiem 4 bridge and a pedestrian bridge across the Saigon River.

The Saigon River Road will have beautiful scenery and a worthy urban space . The Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Transport said that the Saigon River Road is important in exploiting the economic, port, tourism, and waterway potential of the Southeast region.
