More than 30 years ago, Ho Chi Minh City had the idea of ​​planning Binh Quoi - Thanh Da peninsula (Binh Thanh district) into a cultural - tourism, relaxation and entertainment area serving the city's residents and tourists.

Over the years, the city has made many moves to assign businesses to build urban areas and call for investment, but due to many difficulties and obstacles, this land has not been able to "transform".

Cau Kinh still plays a unique role in the Binh Quoi - Thanh Da peninsula.

The 1/2,000 scale zoning plan of Binh Quoi - Thanh Da New Urban Area (Ward 28, Binh Thanh District) was approved by the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee in Decision No. 3408/2015.

Accordingly, Binh Quoi - Thanh Da peninsula is planned as a new urban area planned and built according to modern ecological urban criteria, with a synchronous urban social and technical infrastructure system invested in and built within the overall space of the natural landscape ecological park.

Previously, people from Thu Duc City took the Binh Quoi ferry to the peninsula, but for many months now the ferry has temporarily stopped operating.

However, the city's socio-economic development situation has changed a lot compared to the time of approval of the 1/2,000 scale zoning plan of Binh Quoi - Thanh Da New Urban Area.

Therefore, in June 2024, the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee issued Decision 2141/2024 approving the task of the topic "International competition for planning and architectural ideas for Binh Quoi - Thanh Da peninsula, Ho Chi Minh City".

Regarding the reason for the selection, the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee emphasized that the Binh Quoi - Thanh Da new urban area has undergone many years of research and investment calls, but the project according to the approved planning has a large area, high total investment and complicated compensation and site clearance work, so it has been delayed for many years without being implemented. The delay in implementing the project has deeply affected the lives and legitimate rights of thousands of households living on the peninsula.

The peninsula located in the heart of Ho Chi Minh City has the wild beauty of a riverside countryside, completely different from the skyscrapers, luxurious residential areas, and bustling port area on the other side of the Saigon River.

The research scope is the entire Binh Quoi - Thanh Da peninsula, the Saigon River section, some areas across the Saigon River (especially Truong Tho Urban Area) in Thu Duc City and Binh Thanh District. The East borders Vo Nguyen Giap Street, Road No. 2, Thu Duc City; the West borders National Highway 13, Xo Viet Nghe Tinh Street, Dien Bien Phu Street; the South borders Vo Nguyen Giap Street; the North borders Pham Van Dong Street. The area is about 1,970 hectares.

The planning scope is Binh Quoi - Thanh Da peninsula, ward 28, Binh Thanh district with an area of ​​about 426 hectares.

The planning area has a total natural area of ​​about 426 hectares, accounting for 20.6% of the total area of ​​Binh Thanh district.

Binh Quoi - Thanh Da peninsula still has a large number of people with houses and land currently living there.

The current population of Ward 28, Binh Thanh District is 16,668 people (current population data in 2020).

The population is concentrated at high density in residential groups in Ward 1 located along Binh Quoi Street, a long and narrow strip of land.

In addition, there are also public works, schools, parks, religious buildings...

Most of the peninsula area is still agricultural land, uncultivated and unexploited, of which about 104.9 hectares of land are managed and used by cooperatives.

Most of the water surface area here is used as a fishing lake service.

Recently, the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee approved the results of the competition, in which the first prize winning plan was assessed by the competition council as outstanding, close to the content and design tasks that Ho Chi Minh City desired. Accordingly, the peninsula space is still a green space, water surface, cultural connection but still has openness associated with the Saigon River.

Under the winning scheme, a network of distinctive open space types are combined to form a continuous park system covering more than 200 hectares.

Mr. Truong Trung Kien, Acting Director of the Department of Planning and Architecture of Ho Chi Minh City (now Deputy Director of the Department of Construction), assessed that the first prize winning plan is highly feasible. Appropriate content ideas will be conveyed into the general planning project of Ho Chi Minh City until 2040, with a vision to 2060.

Next, after the general planning project is approved by the Prime Minister, the city will develop zoning and detailed planning to realize planning ideas for the Binh Quoi - Thanh Da peninsula.

Peninsula residents expect the city to soon realize the dream of the "pearl" Binh Quoi - Thanh Da peninsula. They will enjoy new values ​​and improved quality of life.
