After a year of testing in three localities, the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training proposed expanding primary school enrollment, according to the principle that students can study at schools near their homes.
According to the report of the Department sent to the City People's Committee on primary school enrollment on the morning of March 16, the expansion of the application of the Geographic Information System (GIS) in primary school enrollment is based on the effectiveness and experience of implementation in Thu Duc City, District 8, and Tan Binh last year.
Based on the actual residence of the students, with the help of GIS maps, the local primary school admissions steering committee will arrange the closest school for the children, instead of assigning students in each ward to enroll in schools in that area.
Last year, when tested, this method was assessed to create many conveniences in traveling and picking up students and parents, limiting the situation of "running" for household registration and studying in the wrong area.
However, the Department notes that depending on the actual situation, units can apply GIS as a support tool alongside other methods to achieve the above goals.
Children of the right age must have their information fully declared on the city's education sector's enrollment database and fully authenticated with national population data.

Admissions to grades 1 and 6 in the city are divided into two rounds. The first round prioritizes students who are actually residing in the area. After that, for schools that have not recruited enough students, the local Primary School Admissions Steering Committee can open a second round. The latest announcement of results is August 1. All registration and confirmation of admission by parents are done online.
The Department emphasized that schools are not allowed to accept outside students if they have not yet accepted enough students according to the allocation list of the District People's Committee. If accepted, the school must be approved by the Primary Admissions Steering Committee.
For high-quality secondary schools, advanced schools, international integration schools, with the number of students registering for grade 6 exceeding the capacity, the Department proposes to allow enrollment by survey. If students are not admitted to these schools, they will still be considered for admission to grade 6.
Currently, Ho Chi Minh City has more than 1.7 million students and preschool children of all levels.
