Ho Chi Minh City supports nutrition for children in special circumstances

Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên06/10/2023

Mr. Pham Dinh Nghinh, Vice President of the Ho Chi Minh City Association for the Protection of Children's Rights, said that protecting, caring for and educating children in the early stages of life plays an important role, laying the foundation for the future development of children's brains.

In 2018, the Prime Minister signed Decision 1437 approving the project on care for the comprehensive development of children in the early years of life in families and communities from 2018 to 2025. In the period of 2022 - 2023, the Ho Chi Minh City Association for the Protection of Children's Rights will coordinate with the Taiwan Fund for Children and Families and many other units to implement a scholarship and nutrition support program for children in special circumstances and children at risk of falling into special circumstances.

Accordingly, the total budget of the project has been spent on activities of more than 1.7 billion VND. Specifically, the project focused on coordinating with Tan Phu District to provide nutritional support for 1,570 children; coordinating with Children's Hospital 2 and Tan Phu District Medical Center to organize nutritional examinations for 549 children. Thereby, it is known that more than 64% of children are malnourished, at risk of malnutrition and have nutritional problems.

In addition, the project also promotes communication on nutrition practices; home visits (direct household visit model - PV), profile creation and intervention consultation; combines surveys on the needs and difficulties of children and families, thereby connecting and sending to projects, agencies and units that are capable of considering support.

In particular, the project has coordinated with the Department of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs of Tan Phu District to establish an Office for consultation and provision of child support services in Tan Phu District (at the Executive Board of Ward 3, Tay Thanh Ward, Tan Phu District).

Some limitations of the project mentioned include the fluctuating migration of families, some cases had to change because they no longer lived in Tan Phu District and Ho Chi Minh City; screening and assessment still took a long time; caregivers did not regularly and promptly report the nutritional status of children...

This project will be implemented and submitted to the city for approval in the 2023 - 2026 period with key activities such as nutritional support for children under 6 years old, support for maintaining consultation rooms, coordination of support for nutritional health screening, and nutrition practices.

Decision 1437 of the Prime Minister approved the project on care for the comprehensive development of children in the early years of life in the family and community from 2018 - 2025. The general goal of the project is to ensure that children up to 8 years old have comprehensive physical, intellectual and mental development; have equal access to comprehensive care and development support services according to age in order to realize children's rights, contributing to the development of national human resources.

The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) estimates that most children who miss out on opportunities in their early years are those living in the most disadvantaged communities (vulnerable groups, special circumstances). They have poorer health, fewer learning skills, and lose out on many opportunities in the future.

Ho Chi Minh City has more than 1.8 million children, including more than 10,000 children in special circumstances (such as orphans, disabled children, children who have to earn a living without completing secondary school, abused children...) and more than 19,000 children at risk of falling into special circumstances. Meanwhile, the work of protecting and caring for children in Ho Chi Minh City still faces many difficulties, especially the issue of resources and human resources. Therefore, it is necessary to have the cooperation of the government, organizations and individuals to build a safe, healthy and friendly environment for children.
