According to the People's Committee of Bac Lieu province, the salt making profession in Bac Lieu was formed and developed in the early years of the 20th century. At that time, Bac Lieu was considered the "salt capital" of Vietnam.
Thanks to favorable natural conditions and valuable experience of salt farmers, Bac Lieu salt is always the preferred choice of domestic and foreign consumers because its quality is unmatched anywhere else.
Mr. Pham Van Thieu, Chairman of Bac Lieu Provincial People's Committee, said that the vast white salt fields like "giant silk sheets" are proof of the diligence, hard work and creative spirit of Bac Lieu salt farmers.
"Bac Lieu salt is not only an essential spice in daily meals but also a product with deep cultural, historical and economic values of the locality. With its outstanding quality, Bac Lieu salt not only conquers the taste of domestic consumers but is also exported to many countries. In 2020, the salt making profession in Bac Lieu was recognized as a "National Intangible Cultural Heritage" - Chairman of Bac Lieu Provincial People's Committee informed.
Speaking at the opening ceremony of the Vietnam Salt Festival - Bac Lieu, Deputy Prime Minister Tran Hong Ha affirmed that this is a major event with many meaningful activities.

In the salt fields, human power still replaces machines.
According to the Deputy Prime Minister, the Vietnam Salt Festival - Bac Lieu is an event to honor salt workers who "carry the sun and rain" to create salt grains that crystallize the salty flavor, the pearls of the sea. At the same time, it also contributes to promoting traditional cultural values, attracting investment, linking salt production development, and enhancing the value of Vietnamese salt grains in the international market...
In addition to the achieved results, the Vietnamese salt industry is facing many challenges such as climate change; limited capacity to organize production linkages, apply technology to improve productivity and product quality to meet market demand...
"It is truly heartbreaking that after hundreds of years, in today's salt fields, human labor is still replacing machines and just one rainstorm has turned the salt farmers' efforts into waste; the value of salt grains has not been improved, output is unstable, and profits are still very low. I propose that the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment take the lead and coordinate with ministries, branches and localities to focus on reviewing places with favorable conditions to develop the salt industry in the direction of large-scale concentration; forming industrial salt production areas... so that salt grains become products with economic value, the pride of the Vietnamese people" - Deputy Prime Minister Tran Hong Ha directed.
