Promote rice exports to China

DNVN - To promote rice exports to China, the Trade Promotion Agency coordinated with the Import-Export Department (Ministry of Industry and Trade) to organize a trade delegation for rice products in Guangdong and Hunan provinces - China.

Data from the Ministry of Industry and Trade shows that in the first 10 months of 2024, Vietnam's rice export turnover reached 7.7 million tons, worth 4.8 billion USD, up 10.2% in volume and 23.5% in value over the same period last year.

However, rice exports to China - one of the key markets - are on a sharp downward trend. In 2022, Vietnam's rice exports to China reached a volume of more than 834,000 tons, worth 423.2 million USD. In 2023, China also imported more than 917,000 tons of rice from Vietnam, worth nearly 531 million USD. However, in 2024, Vietnam's rice exports to China decreased sharply.

According to the General Department of Customs, in the past 9 months, Vietnam only exported 241 thousand tons of rice to China, reaching 141.2 million USD, down 72% compared to the same period last year.

Currently, Vietnam is capable of supplying well the popular rice varieties in China such as high-quality fragrant rice, ST rice, glutinous rice...

Rice exports to China have decreased sharply in the past two years.

According to the Ministry of Industry and Trade, China used to be the largest customer of Vietnamese rice, accounting for 27.5% of total export value in 2012. However, from 2017 to present, rice export turnover to China has fluctuated continuously and decreased sharply in the past two years. The main reason is that this country has limited the number of enterprises allowed to export, to only 21 out of a total of about 200 Vietnamese rice enterprises. In addition, fierce competition from rice exporting countries such as Thailand, with high-quality products and professional packaging, also puts great pressure.

To overcome this situation, from December 2 to 6, 2024, the Trade Promotion Agency and the Import-Export Department (Ministry of Industry and Trade) will organize a trade delegation in Guangdong and Hunan, China. The program is expected to have the participation of 10-18 reputable rice enterprises, aiming to introduce products, seek cooperation opportunities, and expand market share in this market.

The delegation will carry out many activities such as B2B seminars, working with large import enterprises, surveying the distribution system and meeting with Chinese management agencies. Through this, Vietnamese enterprises can better understand the policies, needs, and consumption trends in the billion-people market.

The Ministry of Industry and Trade recommends that businesses closely monitor developments in the world rice market, be cautious in their pricing strategies, and maintain the reputation of the Vietnamese rice brand.
