Vietnam and Indonesia have a long-standing traditional relationship. 70 years ago, Indonesia became the first country in Southeast Asia to establish diplomatic relations with Vietnam.
The two countries became Comprehensive Partners in 2003 and upgraded their relationship to Strategic Partnership in 2013. Vietnam is Indonesia's only Strategic Partner in Southeast Asia.
Over the past 7 decades, although the world and the region have witnessed many changes, Vietnam and Indonesia have always been good friends and good partners.
Indonesia is currently Vietnam's second largest trading partner in ASEAN; Vietnam is Indonesia's fourth largest trading partner in ASEAN. According to preliminary figures, in 2024, the two countries' trade turnover will reach 16.7 billion USD.
Indonesia currently has 123 valid investment projects with a total registered capital of 682 million USD. Vietnamese enterprises have tended to increase their investment in Indonesia in recent times.
Defense and security cooperation has been enhanced, contributing to maintaining peace and stability in the region. Cooperation in areas such as education, culture, agriculture, energy, justice, etc. has been promoted. Vietnam and Indonesia share many interests in promoting regional connectivity and international integration, actively coordinating closely at regional and international forums.
Vietnam and Singapore established diplomatic relations in 1973. After more than 50 years, especially more than 10 years of the Vietnam - Singapore Strategic Partnership (2013 - 2024), the relationship between the two countries has developed strongly.
During a phone call with Singaporean Prime Minister Lawrence Wong in late December 2024, General Secretary To Lam affirmed that Vietnam always attaches importance to and wishes to promote the development of the Strategic Partnership with Singapore to become increasingly stronger, deeper, more substantial, and more effective.
Singapore is currently the largest ASEAN investor in Vietnam, ranking 2nd out of 147 countries and territories investing in Vietnam, with 3,915 valid projects with a total registered capital of more than 83 billion USD (mainly in processing and manufacturing industries, real estate business, and electricity and gas production and distribution).
In 2022 and 2023, the two sides signed a series of agreements in new areas of cooperation on: digital partnerships, green partnerships and development in the field of cooperation on renewable energy, as well as on carbon credits.
Cooperation in education and human resource training is a bright spot in bilateral relations.
The two sides agreed to soon upgrade the relationship to Comprehensive Strategic Partnership at the appropriate time.
Regarding ASEAN, Vietnam officially joined ASEAN on July 28, 1995, becoming the 7th member of ASEAN. From initial confusion and caution, Vietnam has participated extensively in all areas of cooperation under the motto of “proactive, active and responsible”, making important contributions to the growth and development of ASEAN.
Vietnam continues to consider ASEAN a priority in its foreign policy, one of the strategic focuses of multilateral diplomacy. Vietnam has also successfully organized the ASEAN Future Forum 2025 in Hanoi.
