French Prime Minister Resigns and Dissolves Cabinet, What's Next?

Experts say the interim government will manage urgent matters in the eurozone’s second-largest economy, but will not be able to introduce legislation or make any major changes. Its role includes ensuring the Paris Olympics, which open on July 26, run smoothly.

“Dealing with current problems means implementing the measures that have been decided and managing the emergencies that arise. Nothing more, nothing less,” said Mathieu Disant, a law professor at the Panthéon-Sorbonne university in Paris.

There have been provisional governments in France, but none have lasted more than a few days. There is no specific limit to how long a provisional government can stay in place. Parliament cannot force the government to resign.

The French National Assembly will elect a new speaker on Thursday. Who holds the position is crucial at a time when it is still unclear who will run the government, as no party or group won an absolute majority in the recent French parliamentary elections.

As is well known, the New Popular Front (NFP), a left-wing coalition of socialists from the Greens, Communists to France Undefeated, was hastily formed ahead of the election.

This alliance unexpectedly won the two rounds of French parliamentary elections on June 30 and July 7, but also did not gain an absolute majority compared to the two remaining major groups, including the far-right faction of Ms. Le Pen and the centrist faction of President Emmanuel Macron. This caused French politics to fall into a stalemate, when it was impossible to determine which alliance would take power to choose a new Prime Minister.

"Never before has the election of the President of the National Assembly been so politically significant," said Eurointelligence analysts. The election of a new French National Assembly President is expected to resolve the current deadlock, as the person holding this position can reconcile the parties, forming a new governing coalition.
