Chuong Market, also known as “the 6th market”, is held only on the 6th day of the first lunar month every year in the alluvial area along the Hoang River, in Chuy Lac Giang village, Dong Hoang commune, Thanh Hoa city.
This is a market with a strong folk culture and a special custom of praying for luck. People come to Chuong market, and whenever they meet, they "hit" each other with tomatoes, eggs... Even though tomatoes are thrown at them, everyone is happy because according to ancient beliefs, the more tomatoes are thrown at them, the luckier and more favorable they will be that year.
According to legend, Chuong market dates back to the Lam Son uprising. On the 6th day of Tet, a Lam Son general was chased by the Ming invaders to the banks of the Hoang River and had no way to retreat.
To hide the insurgents, the villagers gathered at the riverbank to hold a market. Generals and soldiers were disguised as farmers, and weapons were hidden in piles of vegetables and tents.
When the enemy arrived, they thought it was a normal market day and were not on guard. When the general gave the order to attack, the enemy was caught by surprise and had no time to react and were routed.
To commemorate the general who defeated the enemy, every 6th day of Tet, people flock here to hold a market, becoming a beautiful cultural feature of the local people.
