Prime Minister asks France to support Vietnam in preventing emerging infectious diseases

Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh affirmed that Vietnam attaches great importance to and highly appreciates the results of medical cooperation with France in general and with the Pasteur Institute in particular.

On the afternoon of November 14, at the Government headquarters, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh received Professor Francoise Barre-Sinoussi to discuss and study cooperation between France and Vietnam in the field of HIV, tuberculosis, hepatitis and emerging infectious diseases prevention.

Pleased to meet the Professor again and expressing his impression during his visit to the Pasteur Institute in Paris during his official visit to the French Republic in November 2021, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh expressed his admiration for Professor Francoise Barre-Sinoussi - the co-author of the discovery of HIV-the virus that causes AIDS in 1983; awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 2008 for her contributions to humanity.

Since 1988, the Professor has visited Vietnam more than 20 times, directly training and helping many scientists, hospitals and research institutes connect with many experts around the world, participating in international research networks.

Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh emphasized that the Vietnam-France cooperation relationship has been continuously strengthened and developed in recent times, including medical cooperation, especially in the prevention and control of the Covid-19 pandemic; affirming that Vietnam attaches great importance to and highly appreciates the results of medical cooperation with France in general and with the Pasteur Institute in particular.

Informing that the Vietnamese Party and State put the health and lives of the people first and foremost, in order to continue promoting relations in the coming time, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh suggested that France in general, the Pasteur Institute and Professor Francoise Barre-Sinoussi encourage scientists to continue conducting research, especially research on emerging infectious diseases in Vietnam; continue to support Vietnam in the process of developing and approving aid proposals funded by the Global Fund and mobilizing additional budget sources for Vietnam from the international community; expand cooperation activities, exchange experiences, train scientific staff, build facilities, transfer technical technology, and implement research topics in the field of HIV/AIDS prevention and control, Hepatitis B, C and infectious diseases in Vietnam.

The Prime Minister also proposed to continue providing technical support and choosing Vietnam as one of the global research sites in the field of health in general and monitoring the status of disease models in particular; advising on building policies and system capacity to meet the goal of ending the HIV/AIDS epidemic and other epidemics in Vietnam; supporting Vietnam in training medical human resources, increasing scholarships for Vietnamese students and medical staff to study and intern in France, acting as a bridge for scientists to exchange and work in the two countries, and for Vietnamese and French medical students to study with each other; allocating funds to Vietnam to implement a number of specific programs and projects in the health sector...

Professor Francoise Barré-Sinoussi and her colleagues sincerely thanked the Prime Minister for taking the time to receive the delegation and for his understanding and special interest in the health sector, specifically people's health; thanked the Government and the Prime Minister personally for their support, interest, and creation of conditions for the two sides to cooperate very effectively in implementing projects in the health sector, which is a model for the world to learn from...

Professor Francoise Barré-Sinoussi said that she will continue to accompany Vietnam not only in the field of HIV prevention but also in the prevention and control of infectious diseases such as Covid-19, tuberculosis, hepatitis, monkeypox, dengue fever and emerging infectious diseases.

Ms. Francoise Barré-Sinoussi and her colleagues said they are ready to provide technical support, research exchange, support human resource training for Vietnam in the medical field and act as a bridge between Vietnamese and international scientists as requested by the Prime Minister.
