According to France 24, the US National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has awarded a contract worth 843 million USD to billionaire Elon Musk's SpaceX corporation to build the US Deorbit Vehicle spacecraft. This vehicle is designed to bring the International Space Station (ISS) back into the Earth's atmosphere for destruction, after it is decommissioned in 2030.
Many of the ISS’s modules and hardware are expected to burn up and melt as they re-enter Earth’s atmosphere. The remaining thicker, heat-resistant components could fall into the ocean, sinking harmlessly to the bottom, according to NASA.
NASA did not specify whether SpaceX’s design for the US Deorbit Vehicle would be based on one of the company’s existing spacecraft. The US and four international partner agencies representing Russia, Europe, Canada and Japan have been preparing for the final leg of the ISS.
The ISS was created to serve the activities of international astronauts, including the US and Russia. According to NASA, the ISS has 6 sleeping places, two bathrooms, a gym and 360-degree observation windows. Since 1998, more than 260 spacewalks have been conducted at the ISS.
The recent deterioration of the ISS has led NASA and many partners to consider decommissioning the space station by 2030.
