The most prestigious award for outstanding journalistic works
The annual National Press Awards is a major event that attracts special attention from the press nationwide. It is the most prestigious award given to outstanding press works that have made positive contributions to the country's press career, honoring authors and groups of authors with the best works every year.
After 17 years of organization, up to now, the Award continues to receive the active, enthusiastic participation of 18 Associations and 35 affiliated Associations. The number of works by authors who are not members of the Vietnam Journalists Association is 169 works. This shows the strong attraction of the Award and the interest and active response of members and all levels of the Journalists Association nationwide.
This year, the number of works submitted to the Award was 1,894, of which 1,774 works qualified for the Preliminary Round. The Preliminary Round judging process was carried out seriously, strictly, in accordance with the Guidelines and Regulations of the Award Council. The 11 Subcommittees of the Preliminary Round judging worked impartially, completed the Preliminary Round judging on time, and achieved good quality.
Journalists Nguyen Duc Loi and Do Thi Thu Hang informed at the press conference.
The Final Round judging process was carried out in accordance with the Award Charter and the working regulations and voting procedures of the Award Council. Of the 157 works entered in the Final Round, the Council discussed, assessed and voted to select: 9 A prizes, 24 B prizes, 46 C prizes, 45 Encouragement prizes to award the 17th National Press Award - 2022.
At the press conference, journalist Do Thi Thu Hang, Head of the Professional Department of the Vietnam Journalists Association, Vice President of the National Press Awards Preliminary Council, said: "This year, the Awards Council issued the Guidelines for selecting works to participate in the Awards earlier, creating conditions for the Associations at all levels to have more time to select from the base of quality works participating in the Awards. Most units submitted works on time, and the application documents met the requirements. Most of the works participating in the Awards met the selection criteria stated in the Awards Council's Selection Guidelines. The regulations on time, authors, works, and genre groups have basically been properly implemented by the units. Many Associations at all levels with good implementation practices are still maintained."
The works submitted to the Award closely followed major topics from politics, economics, culture, society, national defense, security and other aspects of the country's life in 2022, vividly reflecting important events. Some prominent topics are the efforts to restore socio-economic development and build an independent and self-reliant economy in the context of being heavily affected by the Covid-19 pandemic. The work of Party building and rectification, the fight against corruption and negativity, and protecting the Party's ideological foundation.
Outstanding economic issues such as: Stock market, real estate market crisis, credit fraud, loopholes in petroleum business management; Hot social issues such as: School drug problem, human trafficking to Cambodia, violations at religious establishments, underground egg trading and surrogacy. Especially topics on culture, preserving and promoting national cultural identity; educating cultural and historical values; building cultural institutions in the community; protecting cultural values in the new era...
Journalist Do Thi Thu Hang, Head of the Professional Department of the Vietnam Journalists Association, Vice President of the National Press Awards Preliminary Council, shared information about the Awards.
Journalist Do Thi Thu Hang assessed that, in general, the works participating in this year's Award are of good quality. Most of the works are close to reality, highly topical, and address hot spots in 2022 in the fields of politics, economics, society, national security and defense, Party building, etc.
Many works are invested in carefully, the content is to discover new issues, criticize major policies of the Party and State; propose many creative solutions, good ways of doing things that have the power to spread and influence in society. Many works are of good quality, invested seriously, carefully, have a tight structure, the way of expression is close, vivid, attractive to readers.
Showing the spirit of overcoming difficulties and not being afraid of hardships
At the press conference, answering reporters' questions about the quality and quantity of the Press Photo category, journalist Nguyen Duc Loi said that this year there was no A prize in the Press Photo category, just like many years the Council has always tried to implement solutions to improve the quality of participating press photos. The Council has a priority mechanism for this category, authors with photo works can send directly to the Council without going through a preliminary selection, without going through the association levels... however the number of works is still small.
Delegates attended the press conference to inform about the 17th National Press Awards - 2022.
Responding to the Council's assessment of the journalists' dedication to producing quality journalistic works, journalist Nguyen Duc Loi said: "The dedication of journalists has been clearly demonstrated in journalistic works, especially journalistic works in the investigative reportage genre. To obtain visual information and create quality products, reporters have overcome difficulties, not afraid of hardship, not even afraid of danger to their lives, overcoming mental pressure, natural disasters, epidemics..."
Many reporters go into deep-rooted social issues, touching on sensitive issues in social life, which is clearly shown in many works. There are works that go into negative issues in society, including powerful agencies, officials, and people with positions… these are the hardships in the journey of a journalist.
Regarding the question "The current quality gap between central and local press agencies", the Permanent Vice President of the Vietnam Journalists Association said that there is still a gap between the staff, resources, equipment and facilities of central and local press agencies, however, the quality of works participating in the award shows that this gap is increasingly narrowing. Especially in the genres of radio, television, and print media, this gap is increasingly fading, which is a good thing for the development of local press agencies... I hope that in the near future there will be no more gap.
Reporters asked questions to the Organizing Committee
Regarding the question of investment in the cultural field in the press works participating in the Award? Journalist Nguyen Duc Loi emphasized that the quantity and quality of cultural works have increased, in accordance with the spirit that culture must be placed on par with economics, politics, and society, and the working activities of journalists and reporters are more oriented towards culture.
However, this field still has a lot of room to do, compared to politics, economics, negative waste, the topic of culture is still limited. The Award Council always sets out the policy of paying attention to this field, trying to encourage cultural works. Currently, press agencies are very interested in building cultural pages and columns, this is a good sign for the coming seasons and to have quality works to award, each journalist and reporter needs to make more efforts.
At the same press conference, journalist Nguyen Duc Loi and journalist Do Thi Thu Hang took the time to answer questions from press agencies about the issue of digital transformation of journalism, the impact on works participating in the Award; Improving the quality of press photos; Solution journalism; Works on investigative reporting...
