Thanh Binh An Lac Vien Company, the unit managing the crematorium of the same name in My Thuan Commune (Nam Dinh City, Nam Dinh Province) was accused of asking people to pay an additional VND3.5 million to get 'beautiful bones', forcing them to buy coffins at high prices. This company was also accused of collecting an additional VND700,000 for 'wooden coffin stuffing' if the coffin was brought by a family member.

The deceased's wish cannot be fulfilled.

Talking to VietNamNet reporter , Ms. Dinh Thi Huong (residing in Dong Tam commune, Ninh Giang district, Hai Duong) said: Last February, her father passed away. Before passing away, his last wish was for his family to prepare a coffin made of yellow heart wood; coffins containing ashes can only be bought for 4-6 million, not expensive ones because it is very wasteful. He also wanted to be cremated so that his descendants would not have to rebury him, which would be more expensive.

When her father passed away, on February 18, his family took his body to Thanh Binh An Lac Vien Company in Nam Dinh to complete cremation procedures.

“My family contacted the funeral organizer to sign a contract for an 8 million VND package (including cremation fees and transportation from Hai Duong). When completing the procedures, the company also informed the family that they were not allowed to bring in ceramic or porcelain coffins. They set a condition that they could only bring in wooden coffins,” Ms. Huong recounted.

After the cremation, the staff here took Ms. Huong and her relatives to choose a coffin. Introduced to beautiful coffin models with prices ranging from a few dozen to over a hundred million, the family did not have enough money so they refused.

When seeing the 10.5 million VND coffin, her family asked to buy it, but the staff refused to sell it because they said "the cremated bones are beautiful" so they had to buy a more expensive coffin.

"My father's last wish was to buy a coffin that cost around 5 million. However, when I asked the funeral service, they said they only had a coffin that cost over 10 million. So the family brought 11 million to buy it. But when they brought my father in for cremation, the staff there did not sell the family a coffin that cost over 10 million. They directed the family to a more expensive one.

At that time, my family had about 60 people, each person had to contribute a little more money to buy my father a coffin for more than 20 million," Ms. Huong recounted.

People were introduced by staff to buy in the high-priced area.

"At that time, my father had been put in the crematorium and could not be taken out anymore, so the family had to accept it. To put my father's remains in the ceramic urn they bought into the wooden urn that the family brought, the company asked us to pay an additional 1.2 million, including the required funeral service and wooden coffin insert.

Luckily, there were many people in the family who went so we were able to collect enough money. We only do farming so that amount of money was too much for our family," said Ms. Huong.

Similar to Ms. Huong's family, Mr. Nguyen Xuan Thu (born in 1961, residing in Hoanh Lo, Giao An commune, Giao Thuy district, Nam Dinh province) also reported: "On February 16, my sister passed away, my family signed a contract with this crematorium to provide cremation services. We had already bought a beautiful wooden coffin to bring from home but they did not agree.

They said we had to buy more small ones to put inside. We wanted to buy the cheap ones but they wouldn't sell them. They asked to buy the ones that cost more than 24 million.

The staff at the crematorium said that it would take a large sum of money to buy such a coffin to contain enough bones for the deceased. We had to spend an additional 3.5 million to get beautiful bones, otherwise we would feel guilty towards the relatives.
