US considers revoking legal status of Ukrainian immigrants

(CLO) US President Donald Trump said on Thursday he will soon decide whether to revoke the temporary legal status of about 240,000 Ukrainians who immigrated to the country after the conflict with Russia.

“We don’t want to hurt anybody, we certainly don’t want to hurt them, and I’m looking at that,” Trump told reporters in the Oval Office when asked about revoking the Ukrainians’ status and expelling them. “There are some people who think it’s appropriate, and some people who don’t, and I’ll be making a decision soon.”

A senior administration official said that rescinding protections for Ukrainians would be part of a broader effort by the Trump administration to strip the legal status of more than 1.8 million immigrants allowed into the United States under temporary humanitarian amnesty programs introduced under the previous administration of Joe Biden.

White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said that “no decisions have been made at this time.” Department of Homeland Security spokeswoman Tricia McLaughlin said Wednesday that the department had no new announcements.

According to several sources quoted by US media reporting on the new policy, immigrants who cross the border illegally could be put into a fast-track deportation process known as expedited removal, within two years of their entry.

But for those who enter through legal ports of entry without being “officially admitted” to the United States — such as those on parole — there is no time limit on their expedited deportation.

Former President Biden's programs were part of a broader effort to create temporary legal pathways to stop illegal immigration and provide humanitarian relief.

In addition to the 240,000 Ukrainians fleeing the Russian war and 530,000 Cubans, Haitians, Nicaraguans and Venezuelans, these programs have assisted more than 70,000 Afghans fleeing the Taliban occupation of Afghanistan.

Another 1 million migrants have scheduled times to cross the border legally through an app called CBP One. Thousands more have accessed smaller programs, including a family reunification amnesty for some in Latin America and the Caribbean.

During his campaign, Trump pledged to end Biden’s immigration programs, saying they exceeded the boundaries of U.S. law. Last month, the administration suspended processing immigration-related applications for people who entered the United States under some of Biden’s amnesty programs.
