Waves 'devour' the coast, Binh Dinh residents worry about losing land

According to observations, Tam Quan beach (Tam Quan Bac ward, Hoai Nhon town) was devastated by the waves. The remaining sections of the anti-erosion embankment were just concrete slabs lying around with sand and soil. The concrete sections were cracked, broken, and fragmented. Some sections were broken, collapsed, and washed away by the waves without a trace.

The strong waves eroded deep into the mainland, only about 10 meters from the houses. The coastal road was also "eaten" in pieces. Many sections formed deep abysses, with open mouths, very dangerous for traffic participants.

According to local people, Tam Quan beach used to be more than 50m from the current shore towards the sea. In the past 4 years, this coastal area has suffered serious erosion.

The breakwater eroded and was washed away. Water tore the shore apart. Every rainy season, the erosion of this shoreline becomes more and more serious...

The seawall was broken by the waves, some parts of the foundation were exposed, lying alone on the sand.
Landslides eat deep into the mainland, "devouring" the coastal road.

It is known that the Tam Quan coastal erosion prevention embankment was completed in 2016 with a length of nearly 2.4km. The total investment is nearly 80 billion VND.

During the storm and flood disaster at the end of 2016, a 250m long embankment that had just been put into use was destroyed by waves, forcing the People's Committee of Binh Dinh province to spend nearly 10 billion VND to repair it. In the following years, each landslide caused different sections of the embankment to collapse and be damaged. To date, this embankment section has been almost completely destroyed.

The landslide is only about 10m away from people's houses.
To limit erosion, many people have brought debris to this area to dump.
While the Tam Quan coastal area is seriously eroded, on the other side of the Tam Quan port estuary area, the estuary is silted up, making it difficult for ships to enter and exit.
Binh Dinh Provincial People's Committee is asking for investment funds to build Tam Quan sea dyke.

"Regarding the Tam Quan coastal erosion problem, the area from Tam Quan ward to Hoai Hai ward is about 23km long. The town People's Committee has reported and proposed the provincial People's Committee to consider investing in building the Tam Quan sea embankment," said Mr. Nguyen Chi Cong, Vice Chairman of Hoai Nhon town People's Committee.

Mr. Ho Dac Chuong, Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Binh Dinh province, said that in order to limit the sedimentation at Tam Quan estuary and at the same time limit the erosion that is taking place at Tam Quan beach, the Department has proposed that the Provincial People's Committee consider and study a comprehensive solution with two goals: Minimize sedimentation at Tam Quan estuary and limit erosion, and restore Tam Quan beach.

"Currently, the Provincial People's Committee has submitted a request to the central government for investment funding and is waiting for the results," said Mr. Chuong.
