In recent times, Sa Thay district has proposed many synchronous and effective solutions and has paid attention to directing units, enterprises, local authorities and local people to strive to implement them in order to exceed the target set by the Provincial People's Committee to plant 563 hectares of new forests in 2023.
In 2023, Mr. A Thun, a resident of O village, Ya Xier commune, decided to switch from growing cassava to growing cowpea on his family's 2-hectare upland land. Because cowpea is a forestry tree commonly used for afforestation with high and long-term economic value.
Sharing the reason for deciding to switch from growing cassava to growing cowpea, Mr. A Thun said that in recent years, the cassava growing areas in his family's upland fields located in high mountainous areas were no longer economically efficient because the soil was depleted and needed to be converted. In addition, what convinced him to make this decision was that his family recognized the economic efficiency that afforestation brought.
Through learning from the experiences of people who have grown ghost cow trees in Kon Tum city, Mr. A Thun realized that ghost cow trees are a suitable crop for local natural conditions, so he decided to invest money to buy more than 2,100 ghost cow trees, fertilizers and pesticides to plant on the degraded upland land.

“Seeing me planting eucalyptus and cowpea trees, the villagers came to see me to learn more. The households then registered to participate in the state-supported forest planting project. Some households even spent their own money like me to buy cowpea seedlings to plant,” said Mr. A Thun.
According to Mr. Nguyen Van Hau - Vice Chairman of Ya Xiêr Commune People's Committee, thanks to the promotion and propaganda work, people in the commune have actively registered to participate in forest planting, many people have even spent their own money to plant forests. Up to now, Ya Xiêr commune has planted 114 hectares of forest.
“Afforestation is a suitable economic development direction for the people in the commune. In the coming time, the Ya Xiêr commune government will continue to promote the mobilization of households with qualified production land to boldly invest in afforestation,” said Mr. Hau.
In Sa Binh commune, after receiving the directive documents of the Commune Party Committee, the People's Committee of Sa Binh commune completed the Working Group to direct, urge and guide local people to register to participate in the project of planting and caring for forest trees in 2023.
The number of households registered to participate and the total forest planting area of Sa Binh commune in 2023 has increased significantly compared to 2022. In 2023, Sa Binh commune has 35 households eligible to receive State support to plant 22.4 hectares of forest (eucalyptus trees), 9 households registered to plant 14 hectares of forest (star apple, acacia, eucalyptus) and 45 households registered to participate in the State-supported project to plant 28.2 hectares of macadamia trees.
Mr. A Thuy - Chairman of Sa Binh Commune People's Committee said that eucalyptus, star apple and macadamia are all forestry trees suitable for local natural conditions and have high economic value. From 2019-2022, Sa Binh commune has planted 123.15 hectares of forest, of which 5 hectares are macadamia trees. The forest planting locations are in mountainous areas bordering Ya Xiêr, Ya Ly and Sa Nghia communes of Sa Thay district. Implementing the 2023 forest planting plan, currently, the whole Sa Binh commune has planted 14.5 hectares of forest.
According to the report of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Sa Thay district, in 2023, the Provincial People's Committee assigned the target of planting 563 hectares of new forest to Sa Thay district. During the implementation process, 278 households in Sa Thay district registered to plant 412.17 hectares of forest. However, through inspection and field measurement, the whole district only had 155 households eligible for State support to plant 218.08 hectares of forest. This year, Sa Thay district has more than 198 hectares of area where people registered to spend their own money to plant forests and businesses plan to plant 265 hectares of forest. Thus, up to this point, the total forest area that Sa Thay district plans to plant is 581.08 hectares.
Mr. A Plưng - Head of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Sa Thay district said that the Department has coordinated with relevant agencies and units to advise the People's Committee of Sa Thay district to approve the technical design documents for forest planting in 2023 and complete the documents of households receiving State support for forest planting. Up to now, Sa Thay district has planted more than 200 hectares of forest. The Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of the district is continuing to coordinate with relevant agencies and units to take the next steps to ensure that the forest planting work in the area exceeds the target of planting 563 hectares of new forest in 2023, assigned by the Provincial People's Committee to the locality.
