This is the first time a South Korean acting president has been impeached by the National Assembly, coming less than two weeks after Mr. Han replaced President Yoon Suk Yeol, who was impeached for imposing martial law on December 3, according to Yonhap.
Mr. Han Duck-soo speaks in Seoul on December 26.
The impeachment motion against Mr. Han was filed by the opposition Democratic Party (DP) on December 26 after he refused to appoint three more judges to the Constitutional Court to have nine judges for Mr. Yoon’s impeachment trial. The DP currently holds 170 of the 300 seats in the South Korean National Assembly.
Mr. Han is expected to be suspended from his duties as soon as the impeachment resolution is delivered to him. Accordingly, Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Choi Sang-mok will take over as acting president and acting prime minister. Mr. Han said that he respects the decision of the National Assembly and to avoid further instability, he will suspend his duties according to the law, as well as wait for the Constitutional Court's decision.
However, the ruling People Power Party (PPP) protested the decision of the National Assembly, arguing that the vote was invalid because the number of votes needed to pass the impeachment motion against Mr. Han was 151, which applies to ministers, and not 200, which applies to the president. The required number of 151 votes was proposed by National Assembly Speaker Woo Won-shik just before the vote.
