Vietnamese movies have a hundred billion season

Việt NamViệt Nam26/02/2025

Vietnamese cinema is witnessing strong growth as a series of domestic works continuously surpass the 100 billion VND mark. This opens up a promising future for the domestic film industry.

Entering 2025, Vietnamese cinema is showing positive signs in terms of revenue. In just the first two months of the year, there were four Vietnamese movies surpassing the 100 billion VND mark, some films even achieved this feat in less than a week.

This is an unprecedented phenomenon in the history of Vietnamese cinema, partly showing that the domestic market is increasingly open, and audiences are also willing to spend more money to support domestic films.

Vietnamese movies keep accelerating

Previously, the factor that helped a Vietnamese film surpass the 100 billion VND mark was often thanks to the director's name or the appeal of the stars.

When combined with a strong promotional strategy, projects not only ensure revenue but can also quickly create a positive effect at the box office.

However, the appearance of Ghost lights proved the opposite. The film was directed by a new director, and did not feature any popular faces, but it still caused a stir.

Ghost Lights was a big surprise at the box office earlier this year.

Before that, horror movies Ghost, Ghost Dog also surpassed the 100 billion VND mark, but behind it was an experienced crew, or the participation of famous actors such as People's Artist Kim Xuan, Meritorious Artist Thanh Loc, Viet Huong, Van Dung...

Show director's movies Hoang Nam has cooled down, no longer holding the leading position but still raking in more than 105 billion VND according to data from Box Office Vietnam (independent observation unit).

This is a very impressive achievement for a debut work, without the guarantee of a box office star or famous director.

If Ghost lights It took more than two weeks to reach 100 billion VND. Ancestral home (Huynh Lap) The director) needed less than a week to surpass this milestone.

That proves that the speed at which Vietnamese films make money has increased significantly, the time it takes to reach the 100 billion mark is no longer as long as before.

The market is no longer limited to familiar names like Tran Thanh, Ly Hai, Victor Vu... but new faces have appeared.

Young directors like Hoang Nam and Huynh Lap can still join the "hundred billion club" if they know how to grasp audience tastes, exploit attractive content and implement reasonable marketing plans.

Same case as Thu Trang with the first film Billionaire Kiss .

From a little-noticed project during this year's Tet film season, the work quickly made a spectacular comeback thanks to the crew knowing how to take advantage of opportunities and apply effective communication strategies.

Ancestral house surpassed 100 billion VND mark in less than a week.

The future is wide open for Vietnamese cinema

On forums and social networks, some opinions say that many Vietnamese films reach the “hundred billion” mark because the audience is easygoing. But that is not the case.

Domestic projects still receive mixed reviews, even facing criticism if the content is superficial or the script lacks depth .

On the positive side, the increasing number of Vietnamese films achieving high revenue reflects changes in the entertainment habits of audiences, and is also a testament to the development of the economy and the film industry.

As living standards improve, the need for entertainment increases. Audiences are willing to spend money on tickets to enjoy good movies on the big screen – an experience that cannot be found anywhere else but in the theater.

Look no further, China has already build for themselves a personal “cinema empire”. The audience of the “billion-people country” has long been less interested in Hollywood blockbusters, instead paying more attention to domestic films.

Last year, statistics from Maoyan - a Chinese revenue tracking platform - showed that only one Hollywood film made it into the top 10 highest-grossing films of the year, which was Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire .

No matter how heavily invested, American films fail at the Chinese box office because they cannot surpass domestic projects.

Most recently, animated blockbuster Na Tra 2: The Demon Boy Who Stirred Up the Sea just set a record as the highest-grossing animated film worldwide, surpassing Inside Out 2 has grossed over a billion dollars despite only being shown domestically.

Na Tra 2 sets global box office record despite only showing in domestic market.

Similarly, the box office success of Vietnamese films will also help audiences and producers feel more confident about the domestic film market. The crew and director will also be able to attract more investment capital, thereby having a larger budget to make better quality films.

This not only contributes to raising the general level of Vietnamese cinema but also motivates many young filmmakers to boldly try their hand at bolder ideas.

As of now, Ancestral home Huynh Lap's film has earned more than 114 billion VND. The film is still continuously at the top of the daily revenue chart of Box Office Vietnam and is constantly accelerating on the box office track.

In the near future, perhaps 100 billion VND will no longer be an amazing milestone for Vietnamese cinema, instead it will be 200 billion, or even 300 billion VND.
