Philippines uses other countries' images to promote tourism

Some images used by the Philippine government in tourism promotion videos were found to be taken from other countries such as Indonesia and Brazil.

Philippine advertising agency DDB apologized on July 2 for using images from other countries in a tourism promotion video commissioned by the government. Among them were rice terraces in Indonesia and sand dunes in Brazil. Images from Switzerland and the UAE were also said to have appeared in the video. The company said it was an unfortunate oversight.

The plagiarized video was released on June 27 as part of the government's $900,000 "Love The Philippines" tourism promotion campaign.

The Philippine Department of Tourism said it was investigating the incident and the video was later removed from the internet.

Tourism is a major industry in the Philippines, which boasts pristine diving spots and white-sand beaches. However, visitor numbers are still lower than in neighboring countries due to poor infrastructure and high travel costs.

In 2022, the Philippines welcomed 2.7 million international visitors, down 68% from the same period in 2019, according to the United Nations World Tourism Organization.
