What do travelers expect from digital travel experiences?
A recent report by The Outbox Company - a leading travel market research company in the Asia-Pacific region, shows that among the digital travel services being developed in Vietnam and around the world, the flexibility, popularity and improvement of the international payment system are the most anticipated.
The survey found that 72% of respondents expressed a desire for seamless payment solutions to be available at accommodation, dining, shopping, and other service providers. There is also a growing demand for cashless transactions, e-wallets, and alternative payment methods during their trips.
Virtual reality (VR) technology is gradually becoming popular at historical-cultural relics and museums in Vietnam. It allows users to directly immerse themselves in the role, look back at historical images, listen to stories from the past and have an overall view of the visiting space.
The survey results show that 60% of the total number of Vietnamese tourists participating in the survey expect virtual reality technology to play an important role in their journey of discovery. Accordingly, those who have traveled abroad (outbound tourists) are slightly more interested (63%) than those who have only traveled domestically (58%). This data partly reflects the outbound group of tourists who are more familiar with advanced digital experiences.
In addition, AI chatbots, a smart assistant in the travel industry, are considered a valuable tool that can support customers in real time. From personalizing travel experiences to operating businesses effectively, this technology solution is gradually becoming popular in the digital age.
However, there is a significant difference in the demand for AI chatbots between domestic and Vietnamese tourists traveling abroad. With 51% of the total number of tourists who have traveled abroad participating in The Outbox Company's survey, this group of people wants to use AI chatbots for destination exploration activities. Meanwhile, only 41% of the total number of domestic tourists have this demand.
For outbound travelers, offline access to maps and translation tools is considered extremely important, with 65% expecting the technology to be updated and improved, compared to 52% of domestic travelers. This significant gap reflects the challenges international travelers face with language barriers and connectivity. Therefore, being able to access maps and translation apps even when offline has become a necessity.
Additionally, emerging technologies such as RFID tags and robotic assistants are gaining traction among some travelers. This trend indicates that international travelers often encounter problems at airports and hotels around the world. Therefore, they need smart travel solutions and tend to use them more than domestic travelers.
Technology adoption based on travel experience
Today, travelers often prioritize the use of practical technology products to enrich their travel experiences. These products include navigation maps, virtual reality tools, and electronic payment systems.
In particular, those who have visited many countries around the world often have higher expectations for the application of technology in tourism services. Because exposure to different technological solutions in many countries will affect their exploration habits when coming to new lands. They will also set many strict standards for service quality and suitable activities throughout the trip.
The Outbox Company notes that Vietnamese travelers are embracing digital travel experiences at many different levels. This accessibility is based on their experience visiting international destinations.

Accordingly, flexible payment solutions (such as: cashless transactions, e-wallets, etc.) are the top priority of Vietnamese tourists. This urgent need requires travel, shopping, and dining service providers to update and improve.
Along with that, expectations for the application of virtual reality (VR) technology and AI chatbots into products also signal a shift from traditional travel methods to digital and immersive experiences for domestic tourists. Many people have used them for trip planning and exploitation throughout the travel process.
Vietnamese people who frequently travel abroad are increasingly in need of translation tools, offline map apps, and smart luggage. These solutions are designed to support mobility, making the journey to explore international destinations smoother and easier.
The Outbox Company notes that Vietnamese travelers are embracing digital travel experiences at many different levels. This accessibility is based on their experience visiting international destinations.
Although the trend of applying automation or robots to product management and operation is attracting the attention of many tourists; in reality, their implementation is still slower than flexible payment solutions and AR technology. Cashless transactions and e-wallets are still considered urgent to promote fast and convenient shopping activities.
Experts from The Outbox Company believe that by understanding the differences in the needs of Vietnamese people when traveling domestically and internationally, tourism and travel service businesses at destinations will have the basis to adjust their digital transformation strategies more appropriately. From there, they will provide better quality experiences for tourists.
