OpenAI is considering developing a new web browser to compete with Google that will incorporate ChatGPT and other AI tools to transform the user experience.

According to The Information , OpenAI, the parent company of ChatGPT, has recruited two key engineers from the Google Chrome project. Among them, Ben Goodger is known as one of the creators of the Chrome browser.

If the plan goes through, OpenAI would become a direct competitor to Google, which currently dominates the browser and search market.

OpenAI's project is gaining more attention as the US Department of Justice (DOJ) calls on Alphabet (Google's parent company) to sell its Chrome browser as a remedy for an antitrust lawsuit.

According to court filings, the DOJ argues that splitting Chrome from Google would "permanently curtail Google's control over its search engine and allow rival search engines to gain access to the browser."

Launched in 2008, the Chrome browser provided user data that Google could then use to target ads. The DOJ said forcing Google to sell Chrome would create a more level playing field in search.

“To remedy these harms, Google is required to divest its ownership of Chrome. This would permanently deny the search giant control of this important tool and allow competitors to gain access to the browser, which many users use as their gateway to the Internet,” the 23-page filing stated.
