Yesterday (Vietnam time), the White House confirmed that it had signed a power transfer agreement with the transition team of US President-elect Donald Trump, according to Reuters.

On the same day, President-elect Donald Trump announced a series of candidates for many cabinet and White House positions after taking office on January 20, 2025. Specifically, economist Dr. Kevin Hassett, former Director of the White House Council of Economic Advisers (2017 - 2019), was nominated to lead the National Economic Council. Mr. Hassett was the chief economic advisor to the late Senator John McCain during the 2000 primary election and a veteran economic advisor to the campaigns of Mr. George W. Bush in 2004, Mr. McCain in 2008, and Mr. Mitt Romney in 2012.

Mr. Trump also chose attorney Jamieson Greer as US Trade Representative in the next administration.

Is President-elect Donald Trump's Cabinet a 'step back' in diversity?

"Jamieson Greer will lead the Office of the US Trade Representative focused on addressing America's massive trade deficit, protecting American manufacturing, agriculture and services, and opening export markets everywhere," Reuters quoted Trump's announcement. Greer was chief of staff to former US Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer, the architect of the initial plan to impose tariffs on about $370 billion worth of Chinese imports during Trump's first term and renegotiate the US free trade agreement with Canada and Mexico.

Trump’s other nominees include Jim O’Neill as deputy secretary of health and human services, and Jay Bhattacharya as head of the National Institutes of Health (NIH). The NIH is the agency that allocates public funds for America’s medical research efforts, with a budget of about $47.3 billion. The NIH director oversees a total of 27 institutes and centers that conduct early-stage research on everything from vaccines to emerging diseases to new drugs.

Trump also announced his pick for secretary of the Navy, John Phelan, founder and chairman of the Florida-based private investment firm Rugger. Phelan has never served in the military, according to The Hill . Vince Haley, who co-led Trump’s speechwriting team during his first term, has been nominated to head the Domestic Policy Council, the body responsible for implementing the administration’s agenda.

On the same day, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum warned President-elect Trump of the serious economic consequences awaiting both countries if Trump implements a 25% tariff on goods from Mexico and Canada after taking office.

“One tariff will lead to another and so on, until we put our mutual business at risk,” Reuters quoted the letter to Mr. Trump as saying. According to her, the tariffs would cause inflation and unemployment in both countries.
