Specifically, the lawsuit from New York Attorney General Tish James' office accuses Mr. Trump, his two eldest sons, his companies and some of his business associates — of inflating Mr. Trump's net worth to get favorable terms from banks and insurance companies.
Mrs. James also attended the trial and sat in the front row.
Mr. Trump, wearing a navy blue suit and bright blue tie, walked straight past James as he entered the courtroom, but did not look at or interact with her.
The former president's son, Eric Trump, a defendant in the case, was also present in court.

According to Politico, arguments will begin today with Judge Arthur Engoron presiding. The trial does not have a jury, so the verdict will be up to Judge Engoron.
Last week, Mr. Engoron issued a potentially devastating ruling for the Trump family business, holding Mr. Trump liable for massive business fraud and revoking licenses for some of his flagship properties, including Trump Tower and the Trump International Hotel.
As such, the next court hearings will likely focus in part on the penalties Mr. Trump faces. Attorney General Tish James is seeking a $250 million fine and a ban on Mr. Trump operating businesses in the state.
Mr Trump last appeared in a New York court in April, on criminal charges related to his alleged payment of hush money to porn star Stormy Daniels to keep them from revealing their relationship.
Trump is expected to appear in court again next year. He is also facing criminal charges in three other cases in Florida, Georgia and Washington, D.C.
