Children holding mid-autumn lanterns on hospital beds
Following the English teachers who brought the Mid-Autumn Festival early to disadvantaged children at District 8 Hospital, Ho Chi Minh City today, 9.9 brought us many emotions.
It was Saturday, but the hallway of the Pediatrics and Infectious Diseases Department of District 8 Hospital was much busier than usual. The children were carried by their parents and sat in the hallway, waiting for Ms. Hang and Mr. Cuoi - doctors and nurses in the hospital dressed up - to receive gifts. The children played games, painted statues, received candy, milk, notebooks, and scholarships to enjoy the Mid-Autumn Festival and recover quickly so they could return to school like their friends.
Children's joy when receiving early Mid-Autumn gifts
Many children with weaker health could not go out into the hallway to receive gifts. They lay on their hospital beds, listening to the music and watching the lanterns being brought to them. Ms. P., the parent of a 5-year-old child, said her child had a brain tumor and had to undergo surgery at the age of 3. Now the tumor has relapsed and he has to stay in the hospital waiting for another surgery. "If only I could endure the pain for my child," she said, her eyes welling up with tears.
Specialist Doctor I Phan Thi Thanh Ha, head of the Pediatrics and Infectious Diseases Department, said that there are many heartbreaking situations at the hospital. Children are in difficult circumstances, their parents only work for hire, sell lottery tickets or work as construction workers, their income is very low but their children have to stay in the hospital for long periods of time.
Or there are children who have lost their fathers, mothers, some whose parents have both left, and have to depend on their old and weak grandmothers... "There are children who have grown up but come here for examination without a single piece of paper, not even a birth certificate, and their names are only given by their paternal or maternal grandmothers, but they don't actually know their real names. In addition to examining and treating the children, the doctors and nurses also go around asking for milk, cakes, and clothes to give to them," said Dr. Thanh Ha.
The joy of sick children when meeting Hang and Cuoi and receiving early Mid-Autumn gifts
Mr. Truong Chan Sang, an English teacher in Binh Duong, who also contributed gifts to bring early Mid-Autumn Festival to children at District 8 Hospital, said that he also went through very difficult days when he lost his father and his mother worked hard, so he had to beg for food in the temple. "Going through those days, I felt more sorry for the children in difficult circumstances who were hospitalized. We hope that the Mid-Autumn Festival gifts will encourage and help them get well soon and go to school," said Mr. Sang.
Mr. Nguyen Dinh Huy and Mr. Nguyen Phuc Hung, teachers of an English center in Binh Duong, brought Mid-Autumn gifts to children’s hospital beds, sharing that when working in education, they not only bring knowledge to everyone but also participate in activities to serve society and the community. To give disadvantaged children more opportunities to live better lives, so that education is the key that can change their lives…
