Not long ago, a 58-year-old male patient in Hanoi was admitted to the Department of Cardiovascular Diagnosis and Intervention, 108 Central Military Hospital with a persistent headache that did not improve with medication.
At the hospital, CT scan results showed that the patient had a brain aneurysm with a high risk of rupture, and was admitted for intervention.

Or before that, Cam Khe District Medical Center (Phu Tho) also received a 73-year-old female patient who came for examination with persistent headache symptoms, the pain getting worse and worse with nausea.
Here, the doctors ordered an MRI of the brain, the results showed: The right parietal region had a mass measuring 47 x 43mm, with even edges. The patient was diagnosed with: Meningioma.
When does a headache warn of a dangerous disease?
Master, Doctor Chu Van Dung, Department of Internal Medicine - Neurological Resuscitation, Viet Duc Friendship Hospital said that headache is a very common symptom, due to many different causes. According to the World Health Organization, about 50% of adults have at least one headache a year.
According to Dr. Dung, most headaches are mild and not dangerous. However, there are some cases where headaches are a symptom of diseases that can even be life-threatening. For example:
Intracranial pathology : Cerebrovascular pathology (ischemia, hemorrhagic stroke, vasculitis, vascular malformations, venous sinus thrombosis, etc.); inflammation due to infection (meningitis, encephalitis, brain abscess, etc.) or non-infectious (autoimmune, cancer, chemical); traumatic brain injury; brain tumors and mass lesions; increased intracranial pressure syndrome, etc.
Extracranial pathology : Eye pathology, ear, nose and throat pathology, dental pathology, extracranial carotid or vertebral artery disease (arterial dissection).
Systemic diseases : Hypertensive crisis, high fever, hypoxemia, hypercapnia, sepsis, viral infection...
People who often experience headaches include: People who work under stress, people who work a lot in front of computers, people with insomnia, chronic diseases such as high blood pressure or diabetes...
Studies show that more than 95% of headaches are benign. Headaches caused by serious illnesses account for a low percentage, but people should not be subjective.
Warning signs of dangerous headaches:
- Persistent, dull headache or severe headache.
- Headache accompanied by facial numbness, numbness or weakness in one or both arms or legs.
- Symptoms include fever, vomiting, convulsions, blurred vision, tinnitus, difficulty speaking...
- Headache increases when coughing or when exercising.
- Headache is getting worse.
- Headaches that start after age 50 with constant frequency.
Therefore, experts recommend that when symptoms appear, patients should go to the doctor immediately to be detected and treated promptly (if any), to avoid possible bad situations.
