The volcano erupted in 2019, killing 22 people. White Island, formerly a popular tourist destination, is located about 50 km off New Zealand's North Island and 200 km from Auckland, the country's largest city.
Air New Zealand said 10 flights were cancelled on the morning of August 22 due to volcanic ash affecting flight routes. A spokesman later said some flights had resumed after the ash cleared.
White Island volcano after eruption
In a monitoring bulletin, GNS Science (New Zealand) said that satellite images showed that small eruption activity began earlier this month. GNS Science believes this is part of a typical eruption cycle recorded on White Island.
“This activity could continue for some time, from weeks to months,” GNS Science warned. Earlier this month, New Zealand raised the volcano alert level to level 3 on a five-point scale.
