Ia Piar people overcome difficulties to learn to read and write

(GLO)- Every three months, when the fire flickers in each stilt house, many people in Ia Piar commune (Phu Thien district, Gia Lai province) are eager to go to school. Although they are parents, their hands are used to holding hoes and plows, the desire to learn to read and write to make life less miserable has become the motivation for people here to overcome all difficulties to go to school.

The whole family goes to school together.

At 7 p.m., the literacy class in Mo Nai Trang village was lit up. The class consisted of 50 members (43 women and 7 men), aged 15 to 35. Many women carried their children to class. Many families went to school together. The sound of spelling echoed steadily. Dark faces, rough hands spread out to do simple calculations or clumsily hold pens to trace each imperfect stroke. Everyone was diligently studying, hoping to learn to read.

As one of the students who was assessed to have made the fastest progress in the class, Ms. Ksor H'Juon (born in 1991) said: Her family is poor. Due to difficult circumstances, both husband and wife are illiterate. Knowing that the school organized an illiteracy eradication class in Mo Nai Trang village, they both registered to attend. Their 8-year-old daughter also followed her parents to the class to practice more. "Our whole family goes to school together, and if we don't know anything, we ask our children to teach us more. Now, my husband and I know the alphabet, know how to spell, write our names and do simple calculations," Ms. H'Juon boasted.

Rmah Dung (born in 2000) shared: “At first, only my wife went to school. But when she learned to read and write and I was not as good as her, I felt ashamed, so I had to go to school. I invited my brother to study with me. Now, many people in the village can read and write. Every time we go to the commune to do paperwork, everyone can sign their names, no need to fingerprint like before.”

Mr. Ksor Ama Liu - Party Cell Secretary and Head of Mo Nai Trang Village - said: The whole village has up to 63 poor and near-poor households. The illiteracy rate is up to 75% of the population. Without literacy, people have difficulty going to agencies to do paperwork; propaganda work on policies and regimes also faces many obstacles. Therefore, when Ly Tu Trong Primary School organized an illiteracy eradication class, the village's political system joined in with teachers to propagate and mobilize people to attend class. It is great that people attend school regularly and make rapid progress.

Determined to "sow letters"

Ms. Ksor H'Doi - the teacher who directly taught the literacy class in Buôn Mơ Nai Trang - confided: When the class was opened, we encountered many difficulties because most of the illiterate people were from poor or near-poor households and were the main laborers in their families. Every day, people went to work until dark, so it was difficult to arrange their time. Many people were prevented by their own family members with the reason "they have to go to the fields to grow corn and cassava to have something to eat, but how can literacy help their children fill their stomachs?" The teacher had to coordinate with the village elders and village chiefs to go to each house to persuade people to see the benefits of education and come to class. After 3 months, the students had basically memorized the alphabet, could spell, and could listen and write simple words.

Mr. Nguyen Van Tinh - Deputy Head of the Department of Education and Training of Phu Thien district: 2 literacy classes in Ia Piar commune are implemented under Project 5 of the National Target Program on Socio-Economic Development in Ethnic Minorities and Mountainous Areas for the period 2021-2030, phase 1 from 2021 to 2025 in the province with the goal of over 90% of people aged 15 and over being able to read and write fluently in Mandarin. The program includes the following subjects: Vietnamese, Mathematics, Natural and Social Sciences, Science, History and Geography; the total duration is 1,954 periods. Students are supported with funding and learning materials.

Parallel to the class at Mo Nai Trang village is a literacy class at the main campus of Ly Tu Trong Primary School for students from the remaining villages and hamlets of Ia Piar commune. Ms. Nay HBen is the person directly in charge of this class. With more than 20 years of experience, this is the first time Ms. HBen has taken on a literacy class.

She confided: “Being born and raised in the commune, I understand the disadvantages of the people here who are illiterate. Therefore, I tell myself that bringing literacy to the people is my responsibility. The goal of the class is to teach people to read, write and do simple calculations.”

According to Mr. Bui Van Thang - Principal of Ly Tu Trong Primary School, following the direction of the District Department of Education and Training, the school has proactively developed a plan to open classes, coordinated with villages to mobilize students to attend classes, assigned teachers to teach as well as staff to monitor and supervise the implementation process. The school is maintaining 2 literacy classes with 82 students.

Because there are no official teaching materials, the school uses the book series Connecting knowledge with life, building a teaching plan that closely follows the requirements of the program. Students study in the evenings from 7-9 pm from Monday to Friday every week, lasting for 5 semesters (equivalent to 20 months). Most of the students come from difficult family circumstances, so the school actively calls for social support to help them complete the program.
